McGrady Ready for More Playing Time

He feels fine. He played well on Tuesday. On Wednesday, he was back in Orlando, where he was once his unstoppable best, and declared himself ready to do more than offer nightly seven- to eight-minute appearances. - Chron.com

"I just try to play my role, my little cameos I make," McGrady said. "Obviously they are looking out for my best interests, trying to monitor my minutes. At the same time, I feel it's time to really increase them. I think that's what's going to happen in the next few games.  -  Chron.com

"I feel right now, it's time to really increase the minutes. I think that's what's going to happen over the next couple games. I do know my body. I feel fine. It's time to start increasing. I was cool with the plan they had me on, but I think it's time to start increasing."  -  Chron.com

When Eric Maynor phoned and said he'd been traded to Oklahoma City — three days before Christmas — Jazz guard Ronnie Price, napping at the time, thought his teammate was joking.  -  Deseret News

Maynor, however, wasn't kidding. He was dealt Tuesday along with the expiring contract of veteran forward Matt Harpring for the rights to a forward from Germany who will never play a day in Utah, all so the Jazz could save more than $10 million, including nearly $7.8 million in luxury-tax penalties. -  Deseret News

Vladimir Radmanovic was called a "total zero on offense," and Nelson pleaded with the forward to find a way to contribute a modest nine or 10 points a game. "Now, he's reluctant to shoot," Nelson said. "If he's in a slump, I understand that he would be a little more conservative, but he can't go through a game and never look for his shot. He's trying to do other things, and I respect him for that, but we can't have a player be a total zero on offense."  -  SFGate

These ailments, however, should serve as an opportunity for the Celtics to get younger, and that could happen in two ways: 1. the Celtics could acquire another player with scoring punch to boost the bench and relieve pressure off the Big Three and Rasheed Wallace; or 2. coach Doc Rivers could give more minutes to the team’s younger core so they can gain confidence.  -  Boston Globe

Elton Brand complained about the 7-21 Sixers getting off to slow starts. The Sixers have dug themselves double-digit first-half deficits in each of the past four games with Brand coming off the bench. "It's happening every night," said Brand, who led the Sixers with 18 points and 12 rebounds. "We have to fight and claw back to get a lead. It's tough playing like that."  -  PhillyBurbs

Knicks president Donnie Walsh said Tuesday that after his conversation with Nate Robinson's agent Aaron Goodwin on Monday, "I'm not 100 percent sure the other side wants to be traded."  -  NorthJersey.com

Jarvis Hayes (torn hamstring) likely will not return until next week. He eyed Saturday but admits that "might be pushing it." . . . Vandeweghe wants to exercise caution: "If he hurts it again, he could be done [for the season]."  -  NYPost.com

Paul Millsap has left the Utah Jazz's game at Miami after getting hurt trying to defend Heat center Joel Anthony. The Jazz said Millsap needed 10 stitches in his upper lip and mouth. The forward also was diagnosed with a mild concussion after he departed with 5:49 left in the third quarter Wednesday night.  -  Associated Press

If the Knicks sign a player to maximum contract in 2010, a la LeBron James, they will have about $10 million left over to offer Lee in the first year of a long-term deal. If the Knicks continue their winning surge, and if Lee gets named to his first All-Star Game as a reserve, $10 million may not be enough.  -  New York Post

Marks had just been cleared to practice after missing the previous nine games with a strained right shoulder. Hornets Coach Jeff Bower said he had practiced at 100 percent for the past two days, but he was not expected to be activated for Wednesday's game against the Golden State Warriors at the New Orleans Arena before he suffered the calf injury.  -  New Orleans Hornets Central

Yi Jianlian returned to the Nets bench Wednesday night, this time dressed in his white No. 9 jersey and warmups rather than the collared shirt and sports jacket that had become his de facto uniform since injuring his right knee on Nov. 2.  -  New Jersey Nets Basketball

His play on the floor was the real story. The forward scored a season-high 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting (4-of-6 from 3), grabbed eight rebounds and showed no ill effects of the knee injury that sidelined him for nearly seven weeks.  -  New Jersey Nets Basketball

With NBA gate receipts down less than anticipated, the doomsday scenario of a $6-7 million drop in the salary cap for the 2010-11 season now seems overly pessimistic.  -  ESPN
