(From Manila Bulletin)
San Miguel Beer has put the game it lost to Talk ’N Text in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup last Saturday in Zamboanga City under protest, claiming that the defending champions wore the “wrong” uniform.
In a one-page letter signed by SMB coach Siot Tanquingcen last Monday, the Beermen questioned why the PBA Commissioner’s Office gave the Texters, who beat the Beermen, 99-97, a one hour “grace period,” starting the game at 6 p.m. instead of the original 5 o’clock schedule.
The Texters arrived at the venue and warmed up wearing “dark” uniforms (royal blue jersey) instead of the assigned “light” uniform.
PBA commissioner Renauld “Sonny” Barrios, who does not regularly attend out-of-town games, was informed of the situation by media bureau chief Willie Marcial and the commissioner gave Talk ’N Text a one-hour “grace period’ to get into proper uniform before they were to be declared losers by default.
The Texters managed to get their proper uniforms in time and went on to win the game on a drive by Jimmy Alapag in the dying seconds.
Aware of the situation, Tanquingcen informed the PBA officials of a possible protest, citing the fact that the Texters were not in proper uniform by the time of the scheduled 5 p.m. game.
“That’s what the protest is saying, dapat hindi binigyan (one-hour grace period),” Marcial said, adding that a meeting is set today at the PBA office in Libis, Quezon City. “The PBA lawyers will review it (protest).”
Asked to comment on the matter, Virgil Villavicencio, who was elevated as TNT’s team manager, said that they will just “wait for the commissioner’s decision.”
