Tigers 105, Elasto Painters 83 (From PBA.com.ph)
For the second straight game Asi Taulava played as big as his size as Coca-Cola overpowered Rain Shine, 105-83, Friday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Tigers used a 19-9 run late in the third quarter to separate themselves from the Elasto Painters and secured at least a playoff spot for a wildcard seat in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup.
With its fifth win in 17 games, the Coca-Cola dislodged Rain or Shine (4-13) at eighth place and could cement its place in the next round if last-placed Barako Bull (3-13) loses to Sta. Lucia Realty on Sunday.
Anticipating the result could go both ways, Coca-Cola coach Bo Perasol challenged his troops before the game to play their A-1 game rather than wait for things to get complicated, assuming Barako Bull wins on Sunday.
“I have to commend by players for responding well to the challenge. This win really means a lot for us,” Perasol said.
No Coca-Cola displayed as much passion than Taulava, who kept encouraging his teammates everytime the Elasto Painters would rally and keep the score close.
The 6-9 veteran center turned in 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for his sixth double-double for the conference. He also had eight assists and one shot block in 38 minutes of play.
Rookie guard Chris Ross scored a career-high 18 points to lead five Tigers in double figures. Mark Macapagal had 17 points including 3-of-6 from 3-point range and RJ Rizada added 13 for Coca-Cola which gained a 20-8 advantage on fastbreak points and 18-2 edge on second chance points.
After Jeff Chan knocked in a three and Mark Telan scored on a layup to pull ROS within 56-57, the Tigers countered with 19-9 run over the last eight minutes of the third to stretch the margin to 76-65 going into the last 12 minutes of play.
Gary David, back in Tiger’s uniform after the Burger King traded him and guard Chico Lanete for Wesley Gonzales and Alex Cabagnot early this month, sparked that decisive run with a 3-point shot.
“I have mixed feelings having Gary on the floor. Undoubtedly, I am confident having a scorer like Gary. But my worry was whether he’ll fit in with his new teammates. I’m glad he exhibited skills like sharing the ball besides just scoring,” Perasol said.
David, who missed Wednesday game to serve a one-game suspension because of a flagrant foul-penalty 2 in this last game with the Whoppers last Christmas Day, finished with 12 points.
Perasol also said newly hired assistant coach Alex Compton, who work for RoS the past couple of years, did a good job by sharing his insights about the tendencies of the Elasto Painters.
“His opinion really helped us a lot in terms of anticipating RoS’ plays,” Perasol said.
The Elasto Painters were just thee points down at halftime (46-49) but shot just 30 percent (6 of 20) in the third quarter that led to the lopsided result.
Gabe Norwood, Sol Mercado and Eddie Laure each scored 14 points for RoS but the three of them were non-factors in the second half. The trio combined for only 11 points in the last 24 minutes of play.
Their third consecutive loss put so much pressure on the Elasto Painters Painters, who must win their last game against Alaska on Friday to stave off possible elimination. (DBC)

Purefoods Tender Juicy foiled Alaska Milk’s first attempt at an outright entry into the semifinals, muddling up the race on a 94-77 whipping of the Aces in their crucial tussle in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum Friday.
The Giants shifted their game into high gear in the final half, seizing control and going on to score the vital victory that kept their slim chance at landing at No. 2 at the close of the double-round elimination phase.
Purefoods, which will be contented with an outright quarterfinal berth should it fail to make it to the Top 2, blasted Alaska with key runs in the final half, nailing the win that drew them level with Barangay Ginebra at third place with identical 11-6 win-loss cards.
Victories by Purefoods and Ginebra in their closing games will open the possibility of a playoff for the second outright semis seat in case Alaska loses its last two games versus Burger King and Rain or Shine.
Despite the loss, the Aces (12-4) stayed at second place with two more cracks at an outright semis berth. They play the Whoppers Wednesday then the Elasto Painters Friday.
The Giants played with a lot of hustle and with more sense of urgency, beating the Aces, 23-8, on second-chance points and, 28-21, on points off turnovers.
"I'm very happy with the energy and intensity showed by the boys in this game. It led to the crucial win putting us in a good position to make the Top Five," said Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio.
“Alaska has got a big advantage in the fight for the No. 2 spot. We’ll be happy to get outright entry into the quarterfinals,” Gregorio added.
No less than seven Purefoods players finished in double figures, underscoring the balanced game put in by the Giants.

Rafi Reavis made only seven points but grabbed 14 rebounds.
After battling the Aces through 11 deadlocks in the first half, the Giants stepped up their game returning from the halftime huddle, establishing control in the third period.
