Pumaren To Look Carefully on PBA Players’ Trust Fund

(From GMA News)

Former La Salle Green Archers coach Franz Pumaren was one of those who helped Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) players get free education for their kids through the PBA Players’ Trust Fund.

Although inactive from the league, Pumaren remains the PBA Players Union president and he wants to play an active role after hearing concerns about his fellow retired players.

Pumaren said that more players now are not receiving the same amount which were given to some of the retired and active players in the previous years.

“Sabi nga nu’ng iba, halos P10,000 na nga lang daw kada semester ang natatanggap nila," Pumaren told GMANews.TV. “Maybe I should look into the matter since I am still the president of the Players’ Union dahil wala pa rin namang nangyayaring election."

PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios didn’t deny the fact that players now receive less than the previous years since more kids became league scholars.

“Suwerte yung mga time nina Atoy (Co) and Mon (Fernandez) because at that time, kokonti pa lang yung mga scholars kaya medyo malaki pa nakukuha nila and they were able to send their kids to respectable schools like La Salle and Ateneo," said Barrios. “Pero ngayon na marami na and most of the players also want their kids to be sent to the best schools, talagang liliit yung makukuha ng bawat players."

Barrios explained that through the trust fund, 108 kids of active and retired players have become PBA scholars. He also encouraged players to be more involved in organizing events that would help increase the players’ trust fund.

Barrios said that fundraising projects, which will benefit not only the players but also their kids, are needed. Among the proposed projects are concerts, fashion shows and extraordinary games.

“We would like to encourage them to be more active in terms of organizing and coming up with fund-raising activities," said Barrios. “Marami ng mga anak ng players ang pinag-aaral ng PBA and dahil nga sa marami na sila, lumiliit yung natatanggap ng players na pambayad na matrikula every semester."

During Barrios’ first season as PBA commissioner, the league earned a total of a little over P3.1 million for the trust fund and paid P2.3 million in tuition for their scholars. The league earned bigger at that time after successfully organizing the Ateneo-La Salle dream match led by the late Barako Bull governor Tony Chua.

Last season, the PBA could only collect P1.4 million, but paid P2.4 million in tuition with the same number of scholars.

But a source, who requested anonymity, said that there should have been more funds collected last season considering the fact that there were quite a number of All-Star Games and benefit games.

“Tatlo yung All-Star Game last season wherein the Powerade-Pilipinas team participated aside from the fact that nagkaroon din sila ng goodwill series against an Australian team, a benefit game for the victims of Ondoy and also the PBA versus the NBA Generations. Dapat more proceeds should have been collected for the Trust Fund," said the source.

Player fines and worthy projects like the All-Star Games and other PBA-related events usually goes to the Trust Fund.
