Coca-Cola to Bring Back Penny

(From Manila Standard Today)

Comebacking James Penny will be the import of the Coca-Cola Tigers in the coming Philippine Basketball Association Fiesta Conference slated March 21.

The 6’6 Penny, who steered the Red Bull Barakos to the 2005-2006 crown of the same conference, will be back for his third tour of duty in the country. He will join the Tigers in their pocket tournament in Dubai next week.

Coca-Cola coach Bo Perasol told Standard Today that they decided to settle for Penny to help bolster their frontline.

“He will play alongside Asi (Taulava), but his versatility could also put him on the small forward spot,” said Perasol in a telephone interview.

Penny is fresh from a stint in the Mexican League where he played with former and current PBA imports, including two-time slam dunk champion LeRoy Hickerson, who will suit up for the Air21 Express.

The Tigers and the Express will both see action in the His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Almaktoum Cup.

They will go up against the national team of the United Arab Emirates and the Al-Nasr squad. The organizer of the tournament is Naji Aljabri, chief executive officer of the New generation Sports Events Organizers and Marketing, the same organizer of the 21st Dubai International Basketball Championship wherein the Smart Gilas placed third.

Meanwhile, changes are expected to take place within the reigning Fiesta Conference titlist San Miguel Beer and its sister team Barangay Ginebra camps. The two teams which made it to the Final Four, failed to make it to the championship round.

A highly-placed source told Standard Today that several players are now offered on the table. The Gin Kings are expected to retool both their backcourt and frontline while the Beermen are expected to ship out one of their four point guards for a big man.

The Beermen lost Samigue Eman recently to Alaska after the player became an unrestricted free agent and was signed up by the Aces.
