Hughes To Sign With Bobcats? Wizards Waived Ilgauskas

Kings forward/center Jason Thompson could miss up to two weeks with two non-displaced fractures in his lower back. The injury was revealed on x-rays taken after Thursday's practice. The 6-foot-11 Thompson, who sat out the last two practices, suffered the injury when he took a nasty spill in Tuesday's loss against the Detroit Pistons. He recently was reinserted into the starting lineup in place of Spencer Hawes at center. - Sacramento Bee

The Memphis Grizzlies are sending No. 2 overall pick Hasheem Thabeet down for a stint in the D-League. The move has not yet been announced, but two sources close to the situation on Thursday confirmed Thabeet's impending D-League assignment to the Dakota Wizards to ESPN.com. Thabeet will thus become the highest draft pick ever sent to the D-League by an NBA team. Players can only be assigned to D-League duty by their NBA teams during their first two seasons as a pro. - ESPN

"Me being the No. 2 pick doesn't mean I have to go and contribute right away," Thabeet said. "There's a reason they drafted me. I just have to work hard, get better and then one day be able to answer the call." - Memphis Commercial Appeal Blog

In a three-day period that began last Thursday — the day McGrady was acquired — the Knicks recorded 1.5 million page views on their Web site, the most for any three-day span since 2005. * For McGrady’s debut on Saturday, the MSG network reported 172,351 household viewers — the biggest audience for a Knicks game since Feb. 2, 2009, when they played the Cleveland Cavaliers. - New York Times

(Rudy) Fernandez refuted a Spanish newspaper account that he is unhappy in Portland and looking to sign with Real Madrid. "Right now, my heart is in Portland. It doesn't matter if the newspapers talk about me, my contract is in Portland, and I'm happy in Portland." - The Oregonian

Looking for some depth at the position, the Charlotte Bobcats may solve their problem by signing guard Larry Hughes, who can play both backcourt spots, to a contract. - The New Orleans Times Picayune

The nine-month saga that is the sale of the Charlotte Bobcats could be resolved in the next three days, possibly today. Sources close to the situation anticipate a quick resolution, as to whether Bobcats managing partner Michael Jordan or ex-Houston Rockets president George Postolos will close a deal with majority owner Bob Johnson. - Charlotte Observer

The other new Bull, however, continued to make his impact felt. Flip Murray reached double figures for his third straight game, scoring 16 points off the bench. He's now averaging 13 points in his first four games. "I feel comfortable," Murray said. "They told me my role is to provide scoring off the bench and that's pretty much what I've been doing my whole career." - Chicago Tribune

Gregg Popovich had a chat with Richard Jefferson before the Spurs played the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night at the AT&T Center. What Popovich said was music to Jefferson's ears: For the time being, at least, his playing time would come strictly at the small forward position. Jefferson's response was just what Popovich wanted: More aggression, especially going after missed shots. Jefferson grabbed nine rebounds, two shy of his season high. - San Antonio Express-News

Despite shooting guard Marcus Thornton's record-setting 37-point performance on Tuesday night against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Hornets Coach Jeff Bower said he will continue to bring him off the bench. Veteran Morris Peterson will start ahead of Thornton tonight against the Milwaukee Bucks at the Bradley Center. "We like what he gives us off the bench,'' Bower said. "I like that spurt that he provides coming off the bench. For right now, we'll probably stay with this.'' - The New Orleans Times Picayune

Last week's action, or lack thereof, by the Sixers at the trade deadline certainly didn't please many fans. One person it did please was guard Jodie Meeks, whom the Sixers acquired from the Milwaukee Bucks. "I'm happy to be here," said the 6-4 Meeks. "It's good to be somewhere they want you. When the trade happened, I was happy to come some place that wanted me." - Philadelphia Daily News

The Cleveland Cavaliers have assigned guard/forward Danny Green and forward Darnell Jackson to the Erie BayHawks of the NBA Development League, Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry announced today. - Realgm

That could put an end to the list of marquee players who will be bought out by the March 1 deadline in order to be eligible for the playoffs with another team. The Washington Post reported Wednesday night a buyout has been reached with center Zydrunas Ilgauskas, and earlier in the day Sacramento had finalized a buyout with guard Larry Hughes. - FanHouse

After an intoxicating Saturday night debut in which McGrady racked up 26 points in 32 minutes before an adoring Garden crowd, reality has struck the past two games. McGrady is dealing with a bruised left knee -- the same knee that underwent microfracture surgery a year ago yesterday. T-Mac, so brassy in Friday's introductory press conference, lowered his own expectations following his tentative six-point, eight-shot outing in Boston Tuesday, reshifting his goals to staying healthy rather than being the Knicks' leading man. The Knicks are 0-3 with McGrady in the lineup. - New York Post

The Knicks have a roster spot available and Walsh will likely sign a big man to fill that spot. But here's what I don't get: why did the Knicks trade Darko Milicic? He could have been the back-up center. The one thing Darko can do is block shots. That trade made no sense whatsoever. - NY Daily News Blog

If Dorell Wright was worth $7 million in tax money to keep at the trading deadline, then he is worth starting. The problem is if the Heat adds a max free agent alongside in the offseason, it might not have the means to retain Wright, so it’s sort of caught in the middle. - South Florida Sun-Sentinel Blog

Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has waived center Zydrunas Ilgauskas after coming to a mutual agreement on a contract buyout. We’ll add details of the agreement to this page later today. “We agreed to terms with Zydrunas on a contract buyout, giving us further financial flexibility and allowing our young big men to continue to develop over the remainder of the season,” said Grunfeld. - InsideHoops

Utah Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko, after missing the past two-plus games due to back spasms, is feeling better and hopes to play Friday night against the Kings in Sacramento. Kirilenko, who left Sunday night's game at Portland in the first quarter and didn't play at all in home games against Atlanta and Charlotte this week, received treatment on his back this morning and was scheduled to participate in the team's practice. - Deseret News

A source familiar with the situation said Larry Hughes would like to sign with the Bobcats. Hughes played in Philadelphia for Bobcats coach Larry Brown and worked with Bobcats general manager Rod Higgins when Higgins was in management roles in Washington and Golden State. - Charlotte Observer
