KFC-PBA Philippine Cup Semifinals

(From PBA Online)

Aces 104, Kings 79

Alaska drew the first blood in its best-of-7 semifinal series against the weary Barangay Ginebra, 104-79, to take a 1-0 lead of the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup Wednesday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

Fresh from a 19-day break, the Aces jumped the gun on the Kings early and never relinquished the big lead to take the series opener.

"This is a good start, something we can build a momentum going into the next game," said Alaska head coach Tim Cone who drew solid games from Sonny Thoss and Joe Devance to carve out the easy victory.

"But there's nothing to be excited about. Ginebra was tired and emotionally drained," added Cone, referring to the Kings' controversial quarterfinal series against dethroned champion Talk ‘N Text.

Thoss finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds while Devance had 20 and 18 as they dominated the shaded lane against the helpless frontline of Ginebra.

LA Tenorio tallied 19 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists to cover up Willie Miller's anemic 4-point performance.

Mark Caguioa paced Ginebra with 23 points, 13 came in the third period where he tried to mount a rally, but the Aces came up with the needed baskets to thwart the uprising.

"We were a step slower tonight. I think the series (against TNT) kinda drained us not only physically, but for some, emotionally also," said Ginebra head coach Jong Uichico.

"But we can't use that as an excuse. We have to find a way to refresh ourselves in the next game," he added.

Sunday Salvacion was the only other Ginebra player in double figures with 14 while the rest, particularly JC Intal, were disappointments for the Kings.

Intal, easily the MVP in the quarterfinal series against the Tropang Texters after averaging 23.8 points, was held to just 7 markers on 2-of-12 shooting from the floor. - www.abs-cbnnews.com

San Miguel Beer also took advantage of Purefoods Tender Juicy's weariness and scored a 99-83 win in Game 1 of its own semifinal series.

Anthony Washington and Dondon Hontiveros each had 17 points for the Beermen, who after a tight first period, broke away in the second period for a 56-43 halftime lead and seized the momentum of the game.

"This is just one game. Purefoods came from a tough series. And it's human nature na bumaba nang kaunti ang energy level nila," said San Miguel head coach Siot Tanquingcen. "For sure, Game 2 will be much different."

Arwind Santos added 16 points while Dennis Miranda chipped in 15 aside from helping in limiting Giants' star James Yap to just 8 points, all in the free throw line as he was 0-of-8 from the field.

Kerby Raymundo and Marc Pingris led Purefoods with 18 and 17 markers for mentor Ryan Gregorio.

"Everybody played well for them including their reserves. That speaks well on the kind of firepower they have," said Gregorio, who came from a grueling five-game quarterfinal series against Rain or Shine. "This will gonna be a tough series for us."
