KFC-PBA Philippine Cup Semifinals

(From PBA Online)

Giants 103, Beermen 84

Purefoods Tender Juicy came out strong in Game 2, whipping San Miguel Beer, 103-84, to prune down their semifinal series to a best-of-5 affair in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup Friday night at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

Rafi Reavis and Nino Canaleta stepped up a big offensive for the Giants to fill the void left by Kerby Raymundo who was ejected late in the second period. The win ties their best-of-7 semifinal series to 1-all.

Reavis finished with a game-high 20 points, his best scoring output since 2004 Fiesta Cup while playing for Coca-Cola. He also grabbed 12 rebounds and swatted 4 attempts.

Canaleta added 17 points off the bench while James Yap also had 17 markers to help Purefoods recover from an 83-99 defeat in Game 1.

"We wanted to come out with the same energy in Game 1 but the problem was we did not have fresh legs," said Giants head coach Ryan Gregorio who also got 15 points from Roger Yap.

"Tonight, we showed tremendous effort, tremendous energy and defended the way we defended the other teams in the elimination round," he added.

Purefoods was in full command of the game even though the Beermen made attempts to get back in the match but Canaleta provided the needed baskets to thwart the uprising ofSan Miguel in the second half.

Canaleta's triple gave the Giants a commanding 73-52 lead but SMB closed out the third period with 7 straight points to slice the lead to 59-73 entering the fourth period.

But Purefoods responded with an 8-1 surge to push the lead back to 81-60 with 8:32 remaining. The Beermen made another run, this time a 10-0 blast to move even closer at 70-81, 7:05 left in the game.

Canaleta and Yap, former UE teammates in the UAAP, joined forces in the decisive 12-1 run capped by the latter's three-pointer to put the game out of reach, 93-71 with 3:25 remaining.

"No excuses. We came out flat. We did not have the energy and we were complacent," said Beermen mentor Siot Tanquingcen, who absorbed their worst loss in the semis since the 100-129 defeat at the hands of Talk N Text in Game 1 of the same tournament last season.

"Good part of it, both teams are back to zero. For sure, the intensity gonna pick up in Game 3," he added.

Danny Seigle paced San Miguel with 16 points while Arwind Santos and Dondon Hontiveros each had 13 markers for the Beermen.

Raymundo was thrown out of the game at 4:11 mark of the second period for two technical fouls, the last for making a contact with a game official. - www.abs-cbnnews.com

Aces 90, Kings 82

Alaska weathered Barangay Ginebra's fourth-quarter surge and hacked out a 90-82 win in Game 2 to erect a 2-0 lead in their own best-of-7 semifinal series.

Willie Miller bounced back from a 4-point performance in the series opener with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists as the Aces move to two wins away of returning to the All-Filipino finals.

Sonny Thoss added 17 points while Tony dela Cruz had a huge game for coach Tim Cone with 14 points and 16 rebounds.

"Guys are unselfish and that's really key for us right now," said Cone, who also drew 13 markers from Joe Devance.

"But the bottom line is, Ginebra has been here before. We've been here before. We had a 2-0 lead against Talk ‘N Text in the last finals and we lost it. Ginebra was down 0-2 against TNT in the last series and they won it," he added.

After being down by as much as 13 at the start of the fourth, the Kings threatened at 86-82 when Thoss hit a difficult lay up that was enough to shut down the rally.

Enrico Villanueva led the Kings with 17 points, 11 rebounds and 4 steals while Sunday Salvacion chipped in 14. JC Intal had another disappointing performance as he was limited to just 2 points and was 0-of-7 from the field. - www.abs=cbnnews.com
