NBA Daily Results

vs(From the Associated Press) - After revealing that Carmelo Anthony would miss a fourth straight game Sunday, Denver Nuggets coach George Karl joked he would beg the NBA’s leading scorer one last time to play. They didn’t need him. Denver is still winning just fine. Kenyon Martin scored 27 points and Chauncey Billups had 25 points and 11 assists, leading the Nuggets past the San Antonio Spurs 103-89 without Anthony, who took another day to rest his left ankle that he injured more than a week ago...The Spurs were missing their own star in Tony Parker, who sat out a second game with a mild left ankle sprain. But unlike Anthony and Nuggets, San Antonio can use all the help it can get. George Hill had 17 points in place of Parker, and the Spurs finished a disappointing six-game homestand at 2-4. If there was a season the Spurs needed their annual Rodeo Road Trip to come together, this would be it...Tim Duncan had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Spurs. Manu Ginobili added 14 points. After the game, in a question-and-answer with season ticket holders on the court, even Ginobili tried directly reassuring fans things would improve. Ginobili didn’t dwell on Parker not playing. “It didn’t mean much,” Ginobili said. “We lost Tony, they lost Carmelo.”

vs(From the Associated Press) - The Los Angeles Lakers are doing their best to forget all those awful memories of playing in the Boston Garden. Kobe Bryant sank the go-ahead basket with 7.3 seconds left, and the Lakers won 90-89 on Sunday for their third consecutive victory over the struggling Celtics. Boston has not been able to make good on the traditional “Beat L.A.!” chant since winning 131-92 to clinch the 2008 NBA championship here in Game 6 of the finals. “They smacked us two years ago,” Lakers forward Lamar Odom said. “It was a big game for us. This is a team that’s going to be battling to be coming out of the East.” Winners of 32 NBA titles between them—including the last two—the Lakers and Celtics have met in the finals 11 times, from Bill Russell against Elgin Baylor and Wilt Chamberlain, to Magic Johnson vs. Larry Bird and on to the current matchup of Bryant facing the New Big Three of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen...Bryant finished with 19, Andrew Bynum had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Pau Gasol had 11 points and 11 boards for the Lakers, who won their fourth consecutive game...Rajon Rondo had 21 points and 12 assists for the Celtics, who have lost six of their last eight games. Pierce scored 15, Garnett had 10 with nine rebounds and Kendrick Perkins finished with eight points and 10 boards for the Celtics, who were coming off losses to Orlando and Atlanta—two of the top four teams in the Eastern Conference—that left them at 6-10 since beating the Magic on Christmas Day. “It’s nothing to be happy about, I’ll tell you that,” Garnett said. “We haven’t been producing wins, but we’re a hardworking group.”

vs(From the Associated Press) - Even though the Detroit Pistons are having their worst season in 16 years, coach Stan Van Gundy knew his Orlando Magic were in trouble Sunday night. After all, the Magic had lost 10 of their last 11 visits to the Palace of Auburn Hills, and they were knocked out of the playoffs by the Pistons in 2007 and 2008. Sure enough, Orlando blew a 15-point first-half lead and trailed for much of the second half before rallying behind J.J. Redick to post a 91-86 victory...The win means Van Gundy will coach the Eastern Conference in the Feb. 14 All-Star game in Texas. The Magic clinched the second-best record in the East through January, behind Cleveland. Cavaliers coach Mike Brown is ineligible for the honor this season because he coached the team last year...Redick led Orlando with 17 points, including 14 in the second half. Dwight Howard added 16 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks despite missing 10 of 18 free throws...Rodney Stuckey had 18 points and Tayshaun Prince added 16 for Detroit, which lost its fifth straight...Because of the injuries and foul trouble, Van Gundy had to use veteran point guard Anthony Johnson for 20 minutes. Johnson, who hadn’t played in Orlando’s previous four games, finished with six points, three assists and the game’s biggest defensive play. He picked off Ben Gordon’s pass to prevent a tying 3-point attempt in the final seconds, then hit two free throws to clinch the game. “It’s been a while since I was out there, but I was ready,” Johnson said. “Detroit plays slow and deliberate, so I was able to keep my wind and make some plays.”

vs(From the Associated Press) - Chris Bosh has had one taste of a division title. Now he wants another. Bosh had 26 points and 15 rebounds, Andrea Bargnani scored 17 points and the Toronto Raptors won their fifth straight game, beating the Indiana Pacers 117-102 on Sunday night...Teammate Jarrett Jack said the Raptors have bought in to Bosh’s goal...Jack scored 16 points and was one of seven Raptors to reach double figures as Toronto shot a season-best 60.2 percent (50 for 83) and topped 100 points for the 13th straight game...Toronto’s Hedo Turkoglu, who had season highs of 26 points and 11 rebounds Thursday at New York, was knocked out in the first minute of this one when he took an elbow in the face from Mike Dunleavy. Turkoglu suffered a fractured orbital bone, beneath his right eye, and will be re-evaluated Monday...Luther Head scored 15 points as Indiana lost its third straight. Troy Murphy and Brandon Rush each had 14. Danny Granger came in averaging nearly 30 points in his past three games against Toronto but was ineffective in this one, tasked with guarding Bosh and slowed by early fouls. Granger shot 3 for 13 and scored just eight points. “He’s a tough guard,” Granger said. “I mean, he’s an All-Star. I’ve played well against him in the past but, once I got into foul trouble, there’s not much I can do.”...Bargnani, hampered by a sore foot and held to just two points in Thursday’s 106-104 victory at New York, started for Toronto but rookie DeMar DeRozan (sprained right ankle) missed his third straight game, with Sonny Weems taking his place and scoring a career-high 13 points.

vs(From the Associated Press) - At least the New Jersey Nets’ games are getting closer. One problem: Being close won’t help them in trying to avoid the worst season ever. Andre Iguodala scored 14 points, including seven in a key portion of the third quarter, leading the Philadelphia 76ers to an 83-79 victory over the Nets on Sunday night...“There are no moral victories,” said reserve Jarvis Hayes. “We played hard and still got the ‘L.’ They played better down the stretch. They got the key stops and rebounds. They got it all.”...“It’s the same old story,” center Brook Lopez said. “We’ve been playing well the last couple of games, but we just haven?t been able to close it out. Things are just not falling our way.”...Iguodala’s 3-pointer with 6:10 left in the third gave the Sixers a 61-56 cushion. The Nets got within 76-74 with 2:36 remaining, but Iguodala nailed a clutch jumper with 1:28 remaining. Allen Iverson, who had 11 points, made two free throws with 33 seconds to play. The Nets had a chance to tie with 8 seconds left, but Hayes’ 3-point attempt fell short. The Sixers had five players in double figures, with Samuel Dalembert adding 12 points and 11 rebounds, Lou Williams scoring 11 points and Elton Brand 10...Hayes came off the bench to score a season-high 18 points for the Nets. Lopez also had 18 points and eight rebounds, while Yi Jianlian had 15 points and 11 boards. “There are some positive signs that we have to take from these games,” Lopez said. “We have to take those positives and keep going. At least it’s good to know we’re there, we’re close. We’re not getting blown out by 47. We can’t afford to quit at all.”

vs(From the Associated Press) - When LeBron James hit his fourth 3-pointer of the first quarter — from 30 feet away—Los Angeles Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy sat silent in his chair while the sold-out crowd roared around him. There was little Dunleavy or his team could do to stop the Cleveland Cavaliers during their 114-89 win Sunday night. James scored half of Cleveland’s 46 points in the first quarter and the streaking Cavaliers tied an NBA record with 11 3-pointers in the opening period of their season-best eighth straight victory...James heaved baskets from 30 and 28 feet as the Cavaliers made 3-pointers on seven consecutive possessions in the period. “There’s no description of a player getting into the zone like that. It just happens,” James said. “And when it happens, everything you put up, you feel like it’s going in.” Early on, that was true. Anderson Varejao appeared to toss an alley-oop to Jamario Moon in the second quarter, but ended up making the basket when his lob sailed high. Varejao had 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench. All of Cleveland’s first-quarter 3-pointers came within the flow of the offense—either Shaquille O’Neal passing out of the post or James passing out of double teams. James had four 3s during the streak, Daniel Gibson added two and Anthony Parker started it with one 4 minutes into the game...Baron Davis had 30 points for the Clippers, who have dropped four straight and are 1-5 on this eight-game road trip. Los Angeles was again without center Chris Kaman, who has missed consecutive games with a sprained left ankle. Eric Gordon had 12 points and DeAndre Jordan added 11 for Los Angeles. O’Neal had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Cleveland, which kicked off a seven-game homestand with an easy win. Gibson had 14 points and Jawad Williams added 12 off the bench.

vs(From the Associated Press) - The Phoenix Suns finally figured out how to win the kind of road game they’ve been losing lately. Amare Stoudemire scored a season-high 36 points, Steve Nash handed out 16 assists and the Suns snapped a five-game road losing streak with a 115-111 overtime victory over the Houston Rockets on Sunday night. Nash scored 11 points and grabbed a season-high eight rebounds, and Grant Hill added 19 points for the Suns, who got their first road win since a 113-109 victory in Sacramento on Jan. 5. Their last road win before that came on Nov. 29 in Toronto...Aaron Brooks scored 24 points after shooting poorly in the first half and Trevor Ariza had 21 for the Rockets, who’ve lost five of their last eight games...“I still felt like we could find a way to win,” Nash said. “We had a good energy about us and we were tough enough tonight to dig through it.”...“Everybody, from the second unit on down, showed great tenacity,” Stoudemire said. “We had to scrap for it, but we had enough professionalism to pull it out in the end.”...Phoenix stretched the lead to 56-38 in the second quarter, as Houston’s starters continued to misfire. Brooks, coming off a 33-point game against Portland on Friday, went 1 for 7 from the field in the first half. Scola and Shane Battier both went 2 for 7. “We shot the ball terrible in the first half,” Brooks said. “We shot the ball terrible pretty much the whole game, but our defense is what allowed us to stay in the game.”

vs(From the Associated Press) - After scoring a season-high 45 points, Kevin Durant was bound to make a move in the NBA scoring race. So where does he stand now? “Don’t even tell me,” Durant said. Without knowing it, Durant passed LeBron James to take over second place in the scoring race, Russell Westbrook added 28 points and eight assists, and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Golden State Warriors 112-104 on Sunday night...“Just an unbelievable night,” teammate Thabo Sefolosha said. “He deserves everything that he gets on the floor. He works hard and everything, so I’m happy for him. That was just a tremendous effort.” Corey Maggette scored 26 points for Golden State and Monta Ellis added 25, including a pair of 3-pointers that got the Warriors within three late. But he missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer with 1:06 left, and the Warriors didn’t score again. Golden State, which has used 24 different lineups this season due to a series of injuries, lost for the fifth time in a row and the 23rd time in the last 30 games. .“What can I say? It’s tough, man, because we’re really trying to figure out our chemistry and I think we did a lot of good things tonight, but still it’s tough when you have guys in and out and we’ve got new guys coming in and we’re still really trying to figure out our chemistry,” Maggette said.

vs(From the Associated Press) - For the first time all season, Al Jefferson got to take a seat on the bench late in the fourth quarter and watch his Minnesota Timberwolves teammates finish off a rout. He definitely enjoyed the view. “It’s good and relaxing,” Jefferson said. “I just smiled and had a good time.” Kevin Love had a career-high 25 points to go with 11 rebounds and the Timberwolves exacted a little payback on the New York Knicks with a 112-91 victory Sunday night that was easily their most lopsided of this long season. Ryan Hollins had 16 points and three blocks in his second straight strong game since being inserted into the starting lineup for the Timberwolves (11-38), who lost by 27 points at Madison Square Garden last week. Wilson Chandler scored 27 points for the Knicks (18-29), who fell 11 games below .500 for the first time since Dec. 2 when they were 4-15. One night after playing all 48 minutes in a loss at Washington, Jared Jeffries had 14 points and six rebounds for the Knicks, who have lost three in a row. They were hammered on the boards again in Minnesota, getting outrebounded 58-36 after a 59-40 deficit against the Wizards on Saturday...Jefferson added 22 points and 11 rebounds and the Wolves held a 51-8 advantage in bench scoring. Much of that was thanks to Love, who was moved to the bench two games ago in an effort to get more balance between the first and second units.
