The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) on Wednesday denied Talk ‘N Text’s appeal to review the additional P500,000 fine slapped on the franchise for walking out and forfeiting Game 4 of the team’s quarterfinal series against Barangay Ginebra two weeks ago.
PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios said that the total fine of P1 million on the Tropang Texters were not excessive, basically applying the same decision during the league’s first walkout in 1990 courtesy of Añejo against Shell in Game 6 of the First Conference Finals.
"In 1990, the fine (for a walkout) was just P50,000. But the Commissioner (Rudy Salud) imposed a fine of P550,000. Yung (additional) P500,000 ginamitan ng Commissioner’s discretion precisely because a walkout is something that should not take place," Barrios said.
"That was a decision 15 years after the P50,000 fine for a walkout was written in the 1975 constitution. So, kung nag 10-fold ang fine after 15 years and nag-doble for 20 years, hindi na execessive yun."
Last week, Talk ‘N Text team manager Virgil Villavicencio wrote a letter to the Commissioner’s Office, asking for clarification on the excessive P500,000 fine meted on the telecommunication franchise.
The Tropang Texters walked out of Game 4 following a flagrant foul 2 called on Ranidel de Ocampo. They left the court with only 11 minutes into the game and with Ginebra ahead 27-20, believing they were not getting a fair share of the officiating for the entire series.
Outside of the P1 million in fines, the PBA also forfeited the Texters’ revenues from the gate receipts for that match, which could amount in the range from P200,000-P250,000.
