Talk ‘N Text’s walkout during the fourth game of its best-of-five quarterfinal series against Barangay Ginebra last Friday did not come cheap.
Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Sonny Barrios handed the team one the biggest fines in PBA history as he docked Talk ‘N Text P1 million – P500,000 for the walkout which will go to Ginebra, and another P500,000 which will be deposited in the name of the Players’ Educational Trust Fund.
On top of this, TNT will forfeit its share of gate receipts for the game in question which is estimated at about P250,000.
The biggest fine imposed by the PBA on record was the P2.5 million on Tanduay in June, 2000 when the team was found to have fielded an ineligible player during the All-Filipino Cup semifinals.
The Tanduay fine, however, was not game-related but rather off-the-court actions.
The PBA’s other fines that ranked among the biggest were the P550,000 slapped on Anejo Rum in 1990 after it walked out of a championship game against Shell and the P507,000 that was assessed on Red Bull during the 2006 Philippine Cup semifinals when the team walked out, though it later returned to finish the game.
The P500,000 that goes to Ginebra as a result of TNT’s walk out is in consonance with section 32 of the PBA constitution and by-laws.
In handing down the fine, Barrios sought to remind the league members of its responsibility, especially to their fans which he said are be the lifeblood of the league and whose interest the league has sworn to protect and hold as primordial.
“There are established rules and procedures to properly ventilate a team’s disagreement with officiating so that the fans do not become innocent and unwilling victims of a team’s protest over calls,” Barrios said.
