Giants Transform Into Llamados

(From Business Mirror)

JUST a fortnight after clinching the All- Filipino crown, Purefoods Tender Juicy is changing its name.

Purefoods board governor Rene Pardo confirmed to the BusinesMirror on Tuesday that the team is changing its name to Ace Derby for the Fiesta Conference of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

And the newly crowned All-Filipino champions will now be using the moniker llamados, meaning favorites.

Pardo said the new team name will be formally launched on March 17.

Ace Derby is an animal feeds product of San Miguel Corp. (SMC). Purefoods is one of the three teams in the PBA under the umbrella of SMC, with Barangay Ginebra and San Miguel Beer as the other two.

The move is SMC’s way to promote the new product of B-Meg, a company that produces feeds for animals like game fowls and pigs.

There are reports that the team will use the Ace Derby name for just one conference but, according to Pardo, the team has yet to make a final decision.

“Indefinite pa kung hanggang kailan ’yung change of name until the management decides,” said Pardo.

Head coach Ryan Gregorio welcomed the change of team name and promised that the players’ attitude will be the same.

“Whatever name we use, the character and the never-say-die attitude of the team will remain the same,” said Gregorio, whose wards are coming off a successful Philippine Cup campaign, sweeping Alaska in the best-of-seven championship series.

Purefoods will be the second team to make a change in team name this coming Fiesta Conference, which kicks off on March 21 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Burger King reverted to Air21 after one conference this season. PBA board chairman and Express team manager Lito Alvarez said the management decided to drop Burger King because it has already gained significant brand awareness through the PBA.

Meanwhile, Gregorio said the Llamados are considering Lorenzo Wade as their import for the season-ending conference.

The former San Diego State standout averaged 14 points, 2.8 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game in his final season with the Aztecs in 2008-09.
