Llamados Believe In Beginner’s Luck

(From Manila Standard Today)

FOUR-TIME most valuable player Alvin Patrimonio believes in beginner’s luck for the B-MEG Derby Ace Llamados, the new brand and moniker to be carried by his team in the Philippine Basketball Association Fiesta Conference.

B-MEG is the flagship brand of San Miguel Pure Foods’ feeds business, and is a sister company of Purefoods.

“In a way, we always find ourselves lucky every time we carry our company’s new brand name,” Patrimonio, Derby Ace Llamados’ team manager, told Standard Today. “Of course, we will have a new market, but we will still possess the same fighting spirit that endeared our team to our fans.”

The Tender Juicy Giants swept the Alaska Aces in four games to claim their fifth All-Filipino title, putting them in the company of the legendary Crispa Redmanizers for the most number of AFC crowns.

But will the new name affect the image of the squad that became the most popular in the league, especially among women and youth?

Purefoods board representative Rene Pardo said that Patrimonio and the players will not abandon their duties in promoting the Purefoods Tender Juicy Hotdogs brand.

Champion coach Ryan Gregorio explained that he’s still adapting to the new challenge and living up to his team’s new moniker.

“I’ve been an underdog ever since I started coaching, but I should start learning how to be a Llamado and I would like to assure everyone that we at the Derby Ace Llamados team will do everything to make you proud,” Gregorio told everyone, who attended the unveiling of the team’s new name at the A.Venue Hall in Makati Ave., Makati City.

Derby Ace will gun for a possible “modern-day grandslam.”

“We really want to figure prominently in the Fiesta Conference, that’s why we were so careful in selecting our import because the import will determine how far a team can perform in the tournament,” said Gregorio, who tapped the services of 6’6” European League veteran Lorenzo Wade.
