NBA Daily Results

vs(From the Associated Press) - The Boston Celtics are back in the playoffs. They want to be playing their best when those games start. They were very good on Wednesday night. Paul Pierce scored 27 points, Kevin Garnett added 20 and Rajon Rondo had triple-double as Boston clinched a postseason berth with a 113-99 win over the Denver Nuggets...The Celtics dominated inside and the Nuggets, one day after losing to the Knicks in New York, slipped a half-game behind the Dallas Mavericks and into a third-place tie with Utah in the Western Conference with their third consecutive loss. Boston led by 21 points twice in the third quarter before Denver cut the lead to 87-80 going into the fourth. But the Celtics stayed ahead by seven to 16 the rest of the way. Rondo had 11 points, 15 assists and 11 rebounds. Carmelo Anthony led Denver with 32 points and J.R. Smith added 21...Boston has reached the playoffs in all three seasons since Garnett and Ray Allen joined Pierce to form the Big Three. It won its 17th NBA title in 2008 and was eliminated in the Eastern Conference semifinals by the Orlando Magic in 2009.

vs(From the Associated Press) - It took a trip to the weight room, some special exercises and a ball of tape to help Stephen Jackson overcome a painful finger injury and break out of his shooting slump. That, along with a friendly stretch of the schedule, has moved the Charlotte Bobcats up a notch in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Jackson got hot from 3-point range (4 of 6) and scored on a variety of drives on his way to 37 points as Charlotte beat Minnesota 108-95 on Wednesday night to send the reeling Timberwolves to their 14th straight loss...“My left hand is my dribbling hand, my setup hand,” Jackson said. “I do a lot of stuff with my left hand, so it’s been frustrating the last couple of games. But I’m starting to block it out. I’ve made some adjustments and it’s starting to come together. But there’s still a lot of pain.” It didn’t show against the struggling Timberwolves. Gerald Wallace added 23 points as the Bobcats shot 54 percent in their sixth straight home win. “He’s a scorer,” Wallace said of Jackson. “He’s not going to let a finger injury keep him from scoring.” Al Jefferson scored 21 points for the Timberwolves, who came apart in a 20-0 Charlotte run in the second quarter. They committed 17 turnovers and slipped to 5-32 on the road as their long and difficult season winds to a close...Ramon Sessions had 14 points off the bench for Minnesota, which got little from its starting group outside Jefferson. Corey Brewer and Jonny Flynn had eight points apiece on a combined 6 of 17 shooting.

vs(From the Associated Press) - Josh Smith would have preferred that Joe Johnson make the shot. It worked out fine for the Atlanta Hawks. Smith swooped in to dunk Johnson’s miss just ahead of the buzzer as the Hawks pulled out another close one, finally beating the Orlando Magic 86-84 Wednesday night to clinch a third straight trip to the playoffs...After Vince Carter hit a long 3-pointer with 9.9 seconds left to tie it at 84, the Hawks—out of timeouts—rushed down the court to set up Johnson for the potential winning shot. He drove the baseline and put up a one-hander, which bounced off the far side of the rim. But the Magic failed to block out Smith, who soared through the air for the slam just before the red light went on. The officials checked the replay to be sure—it clearly showed him dunking with 00.1 seconds remaining....Smith blew past Rashard Lewis and dunked over Dwight Howard, who had a season-high 24 rebounds but wasn’t there at the end because he came out to help defensively against Johnson. “On the weak side, we just stood and watched,” Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. “The guys on the court are doing the same thing the guys on the bench are doing: just standing there watching.”...Carter led Orlando with 20 points, while Howard chipped in with another monster performance: 19 points and his domination of the boards. Johnson led six Atlanta players in double figures with 17 points, while Smith scored 15.

vs(From the Associated Press) - The Indiana Pacers are winning basketball games too late to do nearly anything but hurt their chances of getting a high draft pick. Danny Granger scored 31 points to help the Pacers beat the Washington Wizards 99-82 on Wednesday night for their fourth straight win...Josh McRoberts had 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds and Troy Murphy had 12 points and 19 rebounds for Indiana. The Pacers won their sixth straight at home and sent the Wizards to a franchise record-tying 13th straight loss...Andray Blatche started for the Wizards a night after he was benched for most of the game following a spat with Saunders. He finished with 21 points in 39 minutes. It was another poor offensive showing for the Wizards, who haven’t scored 100 or more points in any game during the losing streak. Though Blatche was productive and James Singleton had 19 points and a career-high 21 rebounds as a reserve, no other Wizards player scored more than 12 points...Granger scored at least 30 points for the third straight game. “Three games, yeah, 30 points, but three wins too,” he said. “That’s the best part about it. It’s one of those things where you just keep winning and you wonder ‘What if this would have happened a month and a half ago, two months ago.”’

vs(From the Associated Press) - One by one, the Toronto Raptors silently funneled out of the locker room following their second straight blowout loss at home. They had gone just as quietly against the Utah Jazz. Deron Williams had 18 points, 16 assists and eight rebounds, leading the Jazz to a 113-87 victory on Wednesday night...Carlos Boozer added 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Mehmet Okur and rookie Wesley Matthews had 16 points apiece for the Jazz, who won their third straight and improved to 28-8 in their past 36 games. Seven Jazz players finished with at least 12 points...Bosh celebrated his 26th birthday with a 20-point performance for the Raptors (35-35), who fell 1 1/2 games behind Charlotte and Miami in the race for sixth place in the Eastern Conference...Antoine Wright had 10 of his 15 points in the second quarter for the Raptors, while Andrea Bargnani added 12 and Jose Calderon 10.

vs(From the Associated Press) - It’s one down and one to go for the New Jersey Nets in their race to avoid the stigma as the NBA’s worst team, and this rare victory was extra special for interim coach Kiki Vandeweghe. Hours after the death of his mother, former Miss America Colleen Kay Hutchins, Vandeweghe saw the Nets move a step closer to avoiding a dubious date with NBA history by beating the Sacramento Kings 93-79 on Wednesday night...The Nets snapped an eight-game losing streak and a franchise-record, 14-game skid at home because of the play of center Brook Lopez and point guard Devin Harris. Lopez had 26 points and 13 rebounds, and Harris added 24 points and nine assists for the Nets (8-63), who need to win once in their last 11 games to avoid breaking the mark for fewest wins in a season (9-73), set by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1972-73...Beno Udrih had 19 points for the Kings, who lost the eighth time in 11 games. “I would say it’s not even really close, so far, by miles and miles our worst game of the year in every way,” said Kings coach Paul Westphal, who called his team’s performance “horrible.”...Donte Greene added 14 points and 10 rebounds for Sacramento.

vs(From the Associated Press) - Even after he twisted his ankle, LeBron James seemed a step ahead of whatever the New Orleans Hornets tried to do to stop him. James scored an efficient 38 points on 15 of 22 shooting to go with nine assists, and the Cleveland Cavaliers won their eighth straight game, 105-92 over the New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday night...J.J. Hickson scored 20 for the Cavs, who led by as many as 17 and never trailed after James’ floater tied it at 10 in the first quarter. Delonte West added 15 points and Antawn Jamison had 11 points and 11 rebounds as Cleveland won its 27th straight over a team with a losing record. “They just picked us apart defensively,” Hornets forward David West said. “LeBron was able to get himself going and get other guys (involved). When they’re doing that, it’s tough to beat them.” Marcus Thornton scored 20 points and Darren Collison added 17 for the Hornets, who will be eliminated from playoff contention if they lose to Portland on Saturday. West added 16 points, while Chris Paul struggled in his second game back from a left knee injury, finishing with five points and seven assists in 32 minutes...Cleveland (57-15), which currently holds the best overall record in the NBA, also improved to a league-best 26-11 away from home with another road game coming up at San Antonio on Friday night.

vs(From the Associated Press) - The Milwaukee Bucks spent more than a month as one of the hottest teams in the NBA, playing as well as they did when they last won a postseason series on the way to the Eastern Conference finals in 2001. All the hard work caught up with them. Rookie Jrue Holiday had 15 points and seven assists, leading the Philadelphia 76ers to a 101-86 victory over the lagging and lackluster Bucks on Wednesday night...“We’ve got to understand, we haven’t clinched anything yet,” said Bucks forward Jerry Stackhouse, who had 15 points. “We’ve still got to win games to make sure we secure ourselves a spot.” Samuel Dalembert had 12 points and 10 rebounds, Willie Green scored 16 points and Andre Iguodala 14 as the Sixers poured it on for their third win in the last 16 games...“We’re (not) past that point where we look at teams that are below us and expect an easy win. We’re not that good yet. Definitely not,” Bucks center Andrew Bogut said. “We just came out and didn’t play well tonight.” Rookie Brandon Jennings scored 12 points for Milwaukee, but the Bucks shot 5 of 28 from 3-point range and led only once in the game, 3-0, before missing 14 in a row from beyond the arc.

vs(From the Associated Press) - James Harden let loose his first 3-pointer after two weeks away, then bounced a couple times as the ball sailed toward the basket. When the ball splashed down, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s missing piece had returned with a flourish to lead the way in a dominating win with implications on the Western Conference playoff race. Harden returned from an injury to supplement Kevin Durant’s 25 points with 23 of his own, and the Thunder ended a string of futility against the Houston Rockets with a 122-104 victory on Wednesday night...The Thunder got out to a sizzling start and opened a 23-point lead within the first 14 minutes. Their lead was never in jeopardy against a Houston team desperately needing a late charge to make the playoffs. Instead, Oklahoma City used its second-best shooting performance of the season to take a big step toward solidifying its spot in the postseason. In moving to 43-27, the Thunder matched their win total from the past two seasons combined. Luis Scola scored 25 and Trevor Ariza added 20 points for Houston, which fell seven games behind Oklahoma City and 5 1/2 behind eighth-place Portland in the Western Conference with a dozen games left...Lowry had 13 of his 15 points in the first half, but the rest of Houston’s depleted bench did little to offset Harden’s spectacular return on a night that saw Oklahoma City score its second-most points this season and make a season-best 47 field goals on 59 percent shooting. “(Harden) came into the game on fire. When a guy comes in and gives you 20-something points off the bench and he hits three straight 3s, it’s kind of tough to stop that,” Lowry said. “He was fresh. He was hurt, came back and he was on fire.”

vs(From the Associated Press) - Kobe Bryant kept his shooting hand raised high, smiling while backpedaling to halfcourt after burying the San Antonio Spurs. A seventh straight win for the Los Angeles Lakers looked that easy. Bryant scored 24 points and hit a pair of backbreaking 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, helping the Lakers preserve their second-longest winning streak of the season with a 92-83 victory on Wednesday night...Manu Ginobili scored 24 points and George Hill had 21, but the Spurs got little help from anyone else. San Antonio had no other scorers in double figures, and got a dreadful 2-of-11 night from Tim Duncan, who finished with six points and 12 rebounds...Lamar Odom had 19 points and 13 rebounds, and Ron Artest scored 16 points. Paul Gasol had 10 points and 12 rebounds. “I think we understand that we’re at the point of the year where we’re really tuned in and focused about what we have to do out there,” Gasol said. “Defensively, in that good mindset so it carries on to the offensive end.”...Hill got off to a blazing start and had 20 at halftime, but missed all three of his shots in the second half and mustered just one more point. It blemished what began as another promising game for Hill, who made his 10th start in place of Tony Parker. “We played him a little better on the screen-and-rolls,” Jackson said. “We were more prepared in the second half.”

vs(From the Associated Press) - The Memphis Grizzlies didn’t play like a team chasing a postseason spot. Stephen Curry had 30 points and 11 assists, Reggie Williams scored 23 points, and the Golden State Warriors damaged the Grizzlies’ playoff hopes with a 128-110 victory on Wednesday night. “We feel that every game from here on out we have to come with the purpose that it is a playoff game,” Grizzlies guard Mike Conley said. “We’ve got to win these games to have an opportunity. We let this one slip away.” Monta Ellis added 21 points for the Warriors, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Corey Maggette and Anthony Tolliver each had 12 points and Chris Hunter, making his sixth start, recorded his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds...Rudy Gay had 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who had won three of four. O.J. Mayo and Conley each added 21 points. Sam Young scored 14...All-Star Zach Randolph finished with 16 points and five rebounds before leaving in the third quarter with a sore left ankle. The ninth-place Grizzlies fell 4 1/2 games behind No. 8 Portland in the Western Conference with 10 games remaining. Memphis never led after the 9:18 mark of the first quarter as the Warriors went on to shoot nearly 55 percent for the contest.
