Ranidel-Led Talk ‘N Text Outduels Rain Or Shine

(From PBA)

Ranidel de Ocampo stayed on the floor this time and proved of big help as Talk ‘N Text broke into the win-column in the 2010 Fiesta Conference.

De Ocampo, committing costly flagrant fouls in his last two games that kept on the bench, made up for those infractions, leading the Tropang Texters to a 99-96 decision over Rain or Shine at the Cuneta Astrodome Friday night.

“We talked to Ranidel. We told him kami lang ang dapat maglabas sa kanya sa court, hindi ang referees,” said Talk ‘N Text coach Chot Reyes.

"The last time when he sat for three minutes (versus Barangay Ginebra on Fiesta Conference opening day), we gave away a 12-0 run. When he came back, we're already down by three. We kept reminding him about it," Reyes added.

In his last game in the Philippine Cup, De Ocampo committed a flagrant foul on Ronald Tubid, an incident triggering Talk ‘N Text's infamous walkout in Game Four of their quarterfinals series with Barangay Ginebra.

Shawn Daniels concentrated on defending Jai Lewis and the Talk ‘N Text locals did the scoring as they held off the Elasto Painters.

De Ocampo paced the team with 20 points with 16 coming in the final half.

“Gusto ko talagang bumawi para naman makatulong sa team,” said De Ocampo on his sterling efforts enabling the Tropang Texters to rebound from a sorry loss to the Kings Sunday.

Alapag added 19 points, Castro chipped in 15 while Cardona contributed 14.

The Elasto Painters had a chance to force overtime but Gabe Norwood missed a three-point shot in the closing seconds.

"I'm disappointed. It's nice to win but we have to be able to close out the game when we have the chance. We're just lucky Gabe missed that shot," rued Reyes.

"It's very disappointing. They (the Elasto Painters) kept on finding ways to get back. We just couldn't close out the game," Reyes insisted.

The Tropang Texters appeared to have won the contest with a 97-90 lead in the last two minutes when the Painters waged a last-ditch attempt to salvage the game.

Jai Lewis, who finished with a 17 points and 20 rebounds, scored a charity, JayR Reyes, who added a season-high 23 points and 14 boards, converted a twinner then Norwood banged away a three-pointer as Rain or Shine got back into fight at 96-98 with 6.8 ticks to go.

A split from the stripe by Castro a second later kept the possibility of overtime for Rain or Shine.

In the end, Talk ‘N Text leaned on a good defensive effort to scuttle Rain or Shine's bid. (SB)
