(From Manila Standard)
WHEN the 73rd season of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines kicks off on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum, one thing should be noticeable to basketball fans: There is really no sure thing as far as making it to the Final Four is concerned.
The league, which adopted the theme “Where Heroes Are Made,” opens with a twinbill pitting De La Salle University against University of the Philippines at 2 p.m., and University of Sto. Tomas taking on University of the East at 4 p.m..
This early, fans can expect a difficult, mad scramble to the Final Four, with all eight teams capable of pulling off surprises.
This is because all these teams have undergone massive restructuring and tinkering in the pre-season. Some teams have changed personnel, others went abroad for training stints, while most have joined pre-season tournaments to hone their basketball skills.
Still, if pre-season hype is to be believed, defending champion Ateneo de Manila, perennial contender Far Eastern University and darkhorse Adamson University should occupy the top three places in most basketball fans’ list as prohibitive favorites.
The Blue Eagles, who are seeking a third straight title, remain a favorite to make it back to the winners’ circle because they still have most of the players who were responsible for giving the team back-to-back titles.
