Critical Game Four

(From Business World)

The semifinals of the ongoing Philippine Basketball Association Fiesta Conference hit the half-way mark today as the pairings engage in Game Four of their respective best-of-seven affairs; a critical juncture if ever there was one as it has the potential to make or break one team’s bid.

Going into the encounters the San Miguel Beermen and Alaska Aces carry a slight psychological advantage over the Derby Ace Llamados and Talk ’N Text Tropang Texters, respectively, as they are sporting a 2-1 series advantage. A victory by the Beermen and Aces propels them to solid footing as they move one step away from the magic number of 4 (victories) to advance to the finale. The Llamados and Texters emerging triumphant, however, changes the tone of both series.

But as the last two games in both brackets have taken the "unpredictable" route, calling the outcome of Game Four would be difficult to do.

Coming off an inspiring victory previously, the Beermen are on a high. Fashioning a come-from-behind triumph in Game Three they showed how flexible they are as a group in taking head-on whatever thrown their way. Key for San Miguel is its frontline which has outplayed its counterpart to date. Gabe Freeman (18.3 ppg, 18.6 rpg), Jay Washington (17.6 ppg, 7.6 rpg) and Arwind Santos (14 ppg, 5.6 rpg) have all been delivering in more ways than one to much success for their team. Focus and execution should be guarded upon though, as the team has also shown tendencies to lose grip at various stretches, opening opportunities for its opponent.

While by and large its frontcourt has been held in check by the Beermen, Derby Ace’s big men are still competing in all fairness. Import Tony Washam (26 ppg, 8.3 rpg) is still solid while Don Allado (8.3 ppg, 9.3 rpg) is surprisingly holding his own. But outside of the two, nobody from the team’s biggies has shown up on a consistent basis like they did in the earlier rounds. Luckily guard James Yap (19.6 ppg) is holding up his strong play up to this point to somehow cushion the team.

Consistency

If there is anything that is keeping Alaska humming in its series it is the fact that it is getting more consistency from its wards compared to its foe, most especially from its starters which have accounted for 70% of the team’s offensive output in the games that have been played. Most impressive has been import Diamon Simpson who is churning out stud-like numbers of 25 points and 16.6 rebounds in the series. A concern for the Aces, however, is the continued good performance of their bench to negate the depth advantage that Talk ’N Text has. Reserves Reynel Hugnatan (10 ppg), Larry Fonacier (8 ppg) and Tony Dela Cruz (5.3 ppg) have been chipping their fair share especially in their victories, but may need to add up some more as the series goes deep.

Talk ’N Text, for its part, has been blowing hot and cold, affecting its ability to put up a solid fight in the series. Of its players, it is only Ranidel De Ocampo (17 ppg, 6 rpg) and Harvey Carey (10.6 ppg, 8.3 rpg) who have been the most steady game in and game out. The rest have had their moments so far in the series but have not really put their stamp to it. Even import Shawn Daniels (9.3 ppg, 9.3 rpg) is performing "subpar" considering what is at stake. But the thing about the Texters is that they are an explosive lot, and when they do click all at the same time (and Game Four could very well be it) the possibilities are immense; making it hard to discount them altogether even if they are currently down.

Hitting an all-important point in the competition, today’s Game Four has an added significance to it. It could well be the series here, for all we know.

Leaders air common strategy

(From Business Mirror)

Alaska and San Miguel Beer will be working to increase the pressure on their rivals and inch closer toward a possible championship showdown in the Philippine Basketball Association Fiesta Conference.

The two teams regained control of their respective semifinal match-ups with down-the-wire victories on Sunday, which Alaska coach Tim Cone described as “very crucial.”

A 90-86 win gave Alaska a 2-1 lead over Talk ’N Text in the best-of-seven series. That allowed the Aces to relax in practice on Monday and Tuesday.

“We’re hoping the extra day break has refreshed us and we go into Game Four on even terms with TNT,” said Cone of their 5 o’clock encounter with the Tropang Texters on Wednesday at the Astrodome.

The Alaska coach is expecting TNT to come back strong in Game Four as it did in Game Two, so he is keeping his fingers crossed the Aces would be able to fan a streak.

“Usually, the team who can win back-to-back in a series wins it,” Cone said.

With import Diamon Simpson asserting his dominance over counterpart Shawn Daniels and LA Tenorio taking charge when the going gets tough, Cone has a reason to be optimistic.

Cone has won 12 championships for Alaska and his last one came in 2007 in the same conference also at the expense of TNT, then coached by Joel Banal, who is now one of his assistants.

Momentum may be on Alaska’s side but Chot Reyes, coach of the top-seeded Texters, is confident his chargers will rise to the challenge and tie the series.

All they have to do, he said, is to contain Simpson and match Alaska’s aggressiveness.

“We lost Game Three because Simpson is thoroughly dominating Daniels and they [Aces] took 34 free throws to our 13. If we’re able to solve at least one of these then we’ll have a chance in Game Four,” Reyes said.

For San Miguel Beer coach Siot Tanquingcen, their ability to play tough defense will be key to winning Game Four against B-Meg Derby Ace.

Making his ninth semifinal appearance, Tanquingcen said he expects their 7:30 p.m. encounter against the Llamados to be as close as Game Three which they won, 74-70.

“Nothing will be given to you in this series. You will have to work for it,” Tanquingcen said.

The Llamados remain upbeat despite Sunday’s loss but will have to improve on their shooting to be able to compete against the Beermen, according to B-Meg Derby Ace coach Ryan Gregorio.

“Our offense [in Game Three] was pathetic. We only scored 70 points after exploding with 95 points in Game Two. We know for a fact that we couldn’t win against SMB if we don’t score in the high 90s,” Gregorio said.

He gave his troops a break on Monday to enable them to recharge.

“We have no legs last Sunday, something that worries me because I have a short rotation which means that my players play longer minutes.” Gregorio said.

Tougher battles ahead

(From Business Mirror)

AFTER hurdling the most popular ball club in the land, Alaska’s next assignment is the most dominant squad in the ongoing Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Fiesta Conference.

The Aces averted what could be a monumental collapse after Barangay Ginebra launched an improbable run in the closing seconds of their best-of-five quarterfinal series on Sunday night at the jam-packed Araneta Coliseum.

The young Alaska squad showed maturity in the end as the more experienced Kings failed to convert in their last play with five seconds left to surrender a 93-91 decision to the Aces.

The thrilling victory sent the Uytengsu franchise to the best-of-seven semifinal duel against No. 1 seed Talk ’N Text, the team that lost only four in 18 matches in the eliminations and which has beaten them twice in the tournament.

“Talk ’N Text is formidable but we are not afraid of them,” said Alaska head coach Tim Cone, who will be pitted against his close friend and Tropang Texters mentor Chot Reyes.

“Obviously, they [Texters] have a huge advantage and we came from a tough series and the players are really banged up like LA [Tenorio] and Diamon [Simpson]. Some guys are still coming from injuries. It will really be hard,” he added.

Cone’s wards were lucky to survive the onslaught by Ginebra in the dying seconds of the do-or-die Game Five as the grand slam-winning coach admitted Jayjay Helterbrand’s triple shifted the momentum to the Kings.

But Joe Devance, Simpson and Cyrus Baguio had other plans in mind as they made huge plays to spoil a Ginebra celebration.

“Our composure held on in the last play and that’s what we’ve been talking about at the start of the conference,” said Cone. “Joe showed great composure. He didn’t take a quick shot. He has really grown in front of our eyes.”

The American mentor was referring to Devance’s big-time assist to Simpson that turned out as the game-winner.

Helterbrand drilled a three-pointer that capped an amazing 7-0 run for a 91-90 Kings lead with 28 seconds left.

Alaska’s play was botched by the Kings’ pesky defense, but the Aces patiently waited for the right opportunity and, alas, Alaska’s 22-year-old import Simpson banked a short stab on Devance’s pass to beat the shot clock.

Ginebra had five seconds to steal the game but Baguio, the player the Kings gave away for the 33-year-old Willie Miller, snatched the ball from 35-year-old center Eric Menk.

Baguio was fouled, split his two free throws with no time left and sent the pro-Ginebra crowd home in grief.

“It’s almost sad someone had to lose this game and I’m glad it’s not us. It’s a tough one to lose and my heart goes out to them,” said Cone, who expects the same atmosphere with Talk ’N Text as Game One of the semifinal showdown starts on Wednesday also at the Big Dome.

World-Class Caging Seen as RP Invitational Gets Underway

(From GMA News)

Three Olympic coaches, two local mentors with international experience and some of the finest professional and amateur players all in one pocket tournament.

This is definitely a treat to all basketball-loving Filipinos.

Five teams will take center stage beginning Thursday as the Smart Philippine Invitational Challenge gets underway at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Our very own Smart-Gilas national developmental pool, crowd favorite Barangay Ginebra, powerhouse Philippine Basketball Association team Talk N Text, FIBA World Championship-bound Jordan national team and Chinese club team Dongguan will take part in this event.

Toroman, who led Iran to its first FIBA Asia Championship in 2007 and its first Olympic stint two years ago, has been tasked to lead the amateur-laden Philippine national team aspirants back to the Olympic Games for the first time since 1972.

As impressive -- if not more impressive -- as Toroman’s credentials are the coaching resume of Mario Palma and Brian Goorjian.

Palma, a Portugese coach who led Angola to three straight FIBA Africa crown, will call the shots for a Jordan squad that booked a berth to the World Basketball Championship in Turkey next year.

Goorjian is regarded as the most successful coach in Australian basketball history, having spearheaded the team to two Olympic stints – 2004 in Athens and 2008 in Beijing.

He was a six-time Australian NBL Coach of the Year while winning six league championships and 13 finals appearances.

The two foreign coaches have high respect for Filipino players.

"The Philippines can be great in the world, but for what I see, if they play for spectators and not play to win games, it will be very difficult. But I think coach Rajko is going to change that," said Palma.

Goorjian is no stranger to Pinoy basketball either. He has faced RP squads beefed up by all-pro players, but the Smart-Gilas team remains a mystery to him.

"I haven't seen this Philippine team. The teams we played against before (when I was coached the Sydney Kings) were tough and I think this batch will be very competitive with this lineup," he said.

Former national team coaches Chot Reyes of Talk N Text and Jong Uichico of Ginebra had a taste of international basketball.

Reyes was coach of the RP five to the 2007 FIBA Asia while Uichico, a member of the 1984 Northern Consolidated team that won the FIBA Asia Chmapions Cup title in Ipoh, Malaysia, was mentor of the RP quintet in the 2002 Busan Asian Games.

They will use this pocket tournament to fine tune their respective squads in the ongoing PBA Fiesta Cup where they have strong chances of making it all the way.

The Tropang Texters and the Gin Kings will play no bearing games in the pocket tournament, but that doesn't mean they will become laid carpets against either the visitors or the Smart-Gilas squad.

"We're going to treat this scrimmage seriously and toughen the team up for the semifinals and hopefully the finals," said Talk N Text team manager Virgil Villavicencio.

Lim, Uichico’s former teammate and now Ginebra team manager, said the players will be having a hard time adjusting to the FIBA rules.

"It's going to be tough for us adjusting to the FIBA rules but we will try to give our opponents a good competition," said Lim.

Ginebra takes on Jordan in the first game at 4:30 p.m.

A brief opening ceremonies will follow next before Smart Gilas tackles Dongguan in the main game at 7 p.m.

Games will be shown on a delayed basis on QTV Channel 11 from June 26 to 29 from 2 to 5 p.m.

B-MEG BATTLES GINEBRA AS LLAMADOS RESUME SEMIS DRIVE

(From PBA)

B-Meg Derby Ace coach Ryan Gregorio and the Llamados know what they are into when they step on the court on Wednesday to face the Barangay Ginebra Kings.

They know exactly the significance of this rematch. And they are well aware that it may be the turning point of their campaign in the 2010 PBA Fiesta Conference.

“It is truly an important game for us in our pursuit to grab the second seat,” said Gregorio referring to the second outright semifinal berth.

League leader Talk N’ Text has clinched the first of two coveted seats up for grabs with its 14-3 (win-loss) record while leaving defending champion San Miguel (12-5), Derby Ace (11-5) and possibly Alaska (11-6) battling it out for the number two berth.

The fact that they still control their destiny keeps Gregorio and his troops upbeat knowing they have an opportunity to meet their goal.

Derby Ace dominated the Kings, 95-82, in their first encounter last May 9 but Gregorio is anticipating a much tougher challenge this time around citing Ginebra’s retooled roster.

Their four-game winning streak though provides the Llamados with a great confidence boost in their chase for the crucial “W” that would earn them a second place tie with the Beermen and keep them in the hunt for the coveted second Final 4 seat.

“We are upbeat knowing that our fate is still within our control. But we have to take care of our business,” Gregorio said. “We have primed ourselves up for this opportunity and we will certainly make sure that tremendous effort is rendered in our game against Ginebra.”

Game time is set at 7:30 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum. It follows the 5 o’clock match between Talk N’ Text and Barako Energy Coffee.

The Coffee Masters (4-13) are aiming for their first back-to-back wins in the conference to stay in contention for a wild card spot.

After disappointing setbacks to Coca-Cola (7-9) and Air21 (4-13), Ginebra coach Jong Uichico looks at the rematch as “a game that will define his team’s chances.”

He didn’t elaborate but the Kings could be in danger of slipping into the wild card phase with a third consecutive loss.

Gregorio said Ginebra’s retooled roster is comparable to the talent of the mighty Texters and the awesome Beermen and the Kings will always be a dangerous foe especially because they also badly need a victory.

“So I expect nothing short of a playoff kind of game,” Gregorio said.

The Derby Ace coach said Ginebra presents tremendous challenge because it’s a team packed with explosive scorers and scorers who can just light up.

“So it’s imperative that our team defense must be solid the whole game,” Gregorio said. (DBC)

(From PBA)

Talk n Text, the tourney’s top offensive team, stretched its record streak to 12 games in overcoming Alaska Milk in a defensive battle.

The Tropang Texters struggled offensively but made big defensive stops that allowed them to escape with a 76-75 thriller of a win over the Aces Wednesday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Texters held the Aces to a single field-goal basket in the last six minutes for the win that assured the team of at least a playoff for an outright PBA Fiesta Conference semifinal seat.

“Natuyo kami nang husto doon sa Batangas game (versus Ginebra Saturday). Because of fatigue, our usual offense was not there. The good thing is that we made stops when we needed to. We showed we can win even when our shots are not falling,” said Talk n Text coach Chot Reyes.

“Our problem now is how to stop San Miguel in a big game Saturday (in Victorias, Negros Occidental). They’re coming in fresh from a layoff while we’re dead tired from tough games versus Ginebra and Alaska,” Reyes also said.

Talk n Text, at 13-2, and San Miguel, at 11-3, are slugging it out for top placing in the double-round elimination phase.

Teams nursing outside chances to finish second are Derby Ace (9-5), Barangay Ginebra (9-6), Alaska (8-6) and Rain or Shine (7-6).

The Aces threatened to put an end on the Texters’ rampage but fell short in their bid on two misses in the closing seconds.

Alaska got a chance to steal the game following a turnover by Jimmy Alapag with Talk n Text ahead by just one with 20 seconds left to play.

After scrambling for the inbounds, Jeffrey Cariaso -- reactivated from the reserve roster -- settled down with the ball only to miss a short jumper.

But the Aces got another chance to steal the game as the Texters touched the ball last before it went out of bounds.

The Texters eventually won the game as Joe De Vance missed a shot from afar at the buzzer.

Talk n Text put up a good defense, disallowing Alaska from throwing in the ball close to the basket.

“Alaska is a good team with a good import. We expected them to make a good run. The good thing is that we didn’t panic. We stayed calm under tremendous pressure,” said Reyes.

Shawn Daniels went 5-of-15 from the field but gave Talk n Text a big push with his 21 rebounds.

Ryan Reyes, with just 12 points, top scored for the Texters in their lowest-scoring game in the tourney.

Alapag pumped in three treys and finished with 11 points, seven assists and one rebound.

Diamon Simpson led the Aces with 30 points and 19 rebounds. (SB)

The scores:

Talk N' Text 76 - Reyes 12, Daniels 11, Alapag 11, Williams 9,Dillinger 8, Cardona 8, Carey 6, De Ocampo 5, Quinahan 4, Castro 2, Yee 0.

TNT Tries To Stretch Run To 12

(From Business Mirror)

TALK ‘N TEXT goes after a playoff berth for one of two automatic semifinal seats in the KFC-Philippine Basketball Association Fiesta Cup on Wednesday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

Unbeaten in their last 11 games, the streaking Tropang Texters hope to make it 12 in a row against the dangerous Alaska in the main game at 7:30 p.m.

In the opener, Barangay Ginebra tries to revive its automatic quarterfinal seat bid as it clashes with Barako Coffee at 5 p.m.

Talk ‘N Text is coming off an exhausting 92-84 victory over the Kings on Saturday in Batangas City and head coach Chot Reyes hopes his wards have enough energy left for tonight.

“Our concern right now is to recover and be ready to play,” said Reyes, who expressed concern over Jimmy Alapag who suffered cramps against Ginebra because of the poor playing condition in the Batangas venue.

“Right now, we need two wins to be sure and we really have to give our best against Alaska,” he added.

Reyes’s wards last tasted defeat on March 21 against San Miguel Beer, 106-112, but were invincible since then, especially after acquiring Kelly Williams and Ryan Reyes in a blockbuster trade with Sta. Lucia Realty.

The Tropang Texters beat the Aces in their first-round meeting, 100-92, but Alaska has become a different team since acquiring Cyrus Baguio from Ginebra in exchange for Willie Miller.

Alaska has won its last two games, including an impressive 99-97 overtime win against B-MEG Derby Ace. The Aces walloped the Coffee Masters, 104-96, in their last game to go 8-5 in the standings. A victory would tie the Aces at third spot with the Llamados.

“This is a very important game for us,” said Aces head coach Tim Cone. “Talk ‘N Text does a great job attacking for the full 48 minutes and we just have to sustain our aggressiveness and stay in attack mode ourselves.”

In the first game, Ginebra tries to get back in contention for a top-five finish with a victory against the cellar-dwelling Barako Coffee.

The Kings absorbed their second-straight loss at the hands of the Tropang Texters to drop to fifth place with an 8-6 mark.

Ronald Tubid returns to the Ginebra roster after sitting out on Saturday’s game to serve a one-game suspension for his flagrant foul on Jireh IbaƱes of Rain or Shine.

Kings mentor Jong Uichico said Eric Menk would miss on Wednesday’s game because of a recurring calf injury. Ginebra barely beat Barako Coffee in their first meeting, 93-90, on May 12

With four games left, the Coffee Masters desperately need a win to stay within striking distance with Air21. The wards of coach Junel Baculi are sitting at the bottom with a 2-12 mark, losing their last six assignments to trail the Express (3-11) by one game.

KINGS KNEEL BEFORE TROPANG TEXTERS IN BATANGAS

(From PBA)

Denham Brown, a Seattle SuperSonic draftee who once tossed in 111 points in a game during high school, struggled for only 25 and missed crucial shots in his Barangay Ginebra debut.

He muffed a short jumper and two free throws at the finish as the Kings failed to complete a rally, allowing the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters to continue their amazing romp.

The Tropang Texters kept their franchise-record run going and closed in on an outright semifinal entry as it got back at the Kings, 92-84, in a PBA Fiesta Conference Phoenix Fuel On Tour game at the Batangas City Sports Center here Saturday night.

The hottest team in the conference, Talk 'N Text thus nailed down an 11th straight victory, moving it two wins shy – for now -- of an outright Final 4 berth.

Jimmy Alapag outhustled and outplayed his Barangay Ginebra counterparts, coming through with 21 points and seven rebounds as Talk ‘N Text avenged a 90-97 loss to the Kings in their conference debuts and in the process gained the solo lead in the standings at 12-2.

The Kings, missing key players Eric Menk and Ronald Tubid and worse drawing only a combined six points from guards Willie Miller, Celino Cruz and Jayjay Helterband, suffered a second straight loss and slid from joint third to fifth place at 8-6.

Rain or Shine, running sixth with a 6-6 slate, looks to draw closer as it plays Sta. Lucia Realty in the 4 p.m. first game at the resumption of action at the Araneta Coliseum Sunday.

San Miguel Beer seeks to regain a piece of the lead while B-MEG Derby Ace goes for solo third as they slug it out in the 6:30 p.m. second game.

Macmac Cardona, Harvey Carey and Ranidel de Ocampo also churned out double-digit outputs for Talk 'N Text, which hauled down a season-high 74 rebounds.

Brown and the Kings struggled playing minus Menk and Tubid. The former was nursing an injury while the latter served a one-game suspension for his flagrant foul-penalty 2 in their previous game, an 84-83 loss to Rain or Shine last Sunday.

Sunday Salvacion, playing extended minutes in the absence of Tubid, put in nine points including back-to-back three-pointers that brought Barangay Ginebra back into the game at 84-86 with 1:02 left to play.

Talk ‘N Text, however, eased the pressure as Ryan Reyes and Alapag made two free throws each.

The Tropang Texters took control most of the way leading by as many as 15 points twice at 37-22 and 57-42. (SB)

The scores:

Talk ‘N Text 92 - Alapag 21, Cardona 15, Carey 14, De Ocampo 13, Daniels 9, Reyes 8, Dillinger 6, Castro 3, Williams 3.

Barangay Ginebra 84 - Brown 25, Caguioa 15, Hatfield 12, Salvacion 9, Miller 6, De Ocampo 6, Villanueva 5, Wilson 4, Intal 2, Cruz 0, Helterbrand 0.

Quarterscores: 22-16, 45-37, 67-60, 92-84

Talk ‘N Text Extends Franchise Record Win Streak To 10

(From PBA)

Talk N’ Text head coach Chot Reyes had anticipated a tough encounter.

Nothing of that kind happen. Not even close.

As it turned out, the rematch between the Tropang Texters and the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters was a mismatch.

Displaying the kind of urgency and aggressiveness expected from them by their head coach, the Tropang Texters dispatched their dazed opponents with relative ease, 104-85, Wednesday at the Cuneta Astrodome.

“If we take a look at history, (Rain or Shine) somehow always finds a way beat us. So they’re dangerous to play against and for that reason we didn’t take them for granted,” said Reyes, referring to the Wellbest franchise’s having always won at least one game in every elimination round of a conference against the Tropang Texters since entering the league in 2006.

That streak ended for Rain or Shine last night as the Tropang Texters’ mindset coming into the game, Reyes said, was to play tough on everybody.

“We defended not only their tough players – Sol Mercado and Gabe Norwood -- but we also made sure we do the same job  (Don) Dulay, (Jay-r) Reyes and (Jarvy) Cruz,” said Reyes, who recorded his longest winning streak since becoming a head coach in 1993.

Talk 'N Text’s 10th consecutive win – which further extended its franchise record and which recorded the longest winning streak by any team in the conference – enabled them tie idle defending champion San Miguel Beer on top of the standings with their identical 11-2 cards and brightened their chances of clinching an outright semifinals berth in the PBA Fiesta Conference.

“Four tough teams are on the horizon starting on Saturday with the game against Barangay Ginebra,” Reyes said. “Hopefully, we could stay consistent.”

Jason Castro came off the bench and scored 14 points and dished off six assists. Mark Cardona and Ranidel de Ocampo also had 14 apiece for the Tropang Texters, who seized control with a 20-7 run over an eight-minute span in the first quarter.

Talk 'N Text stretched a seven point first quarter lead to 23 points with another 22-6 binge in the second starring Castro, Ryan Reyes, Kelly Williams and Harvey Carey.

Williams turned in 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Tropang Texters who shot a conference-high 54.1 percent from the field and made 21 of 36 free throws.

The Tropang Texters built their biggest lead at 71-36 on two free throws by Cardona with 5:33 left in the third.

Rain or Shine import Jai Lewis led all scorers with 21 points that went with his 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals and one shotblock.

Jervy Cruz and Ryan Arana both came off the bench and scored 14 apiece for the Elasto Painters, who shot just 35.2 percent from the field, their lowest in the conference as Gabe Norwood and Sol Mercado, their Top 2 locals, finished with only eight and seven points, respectively, on a combined 2-for-15 shooting from the floor.

Their sixth loss in 12 games snapped the Elasto Painters’ two-game winning streak and jeopardized the team’s chances of making it to the Top 5 and an outright spot in the quarterfinals. (DBC)

The scores:

Talk N' Text 104 - Castro 14, Cardona 14, De Ocampo 14, Williams 12, Carey 11, Reyes 9, Quinahan 8, Yee 6, Dillinger 5, Alapag 5, Daniels 4, Waters 2, Aban 0.

Rain or Shine 85 - Lewis 21, Cruz 14, Arana 14, Arellano 9, Chan 7, Dulay 7, Norwood 6, Mercado 5, Reyes 2, Tang 0, Ibanes 0, Laure 0, Hrabak  0.

FULL-CHARGED TALK ‘N TEXT EASILY STRETCHES WIN RUN TO 9

(From PBA)

TALK ‘N Text repeated over Air21, 126-100, Friday night, prepping the Tropang Texters up for what head coach Chot Reyes maintains is the “teeth” of their schedule in the PBA Fiesta Conference.

Before a good-sized crowd at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, Kelly Williams scored a conference-high 26 points in leading another sterling all-around effort by TNT’s second unit that propped it to a share of the lead with idle San Miguel Beer.

“This is a good preparation for us going to what I call is the teeth of our schedule,” said Reyes after his team’s franchise-best ninth straight win that jacked its win-loss record to 10-2.

“We are going to be severely tested in the coming stretch of the eliminations. It’s gonna be tough from hereon in,” added Reyes, whose team has Rain or Shine, Barangay Ginebra, Alaska and the Beermen lined up as its next four assignments.

Reyes, who is in the longest win streak of his head coaching career, also said his main concern right now is his charges being satisfied with what they have achieved.

“There’s still a long way to go, it’s still a long second round, and my worry is for this team to get complacent and stagnate. That’s why we have to keep on pushing them, not only in games but also in practice. Our practice must be better than our last,” he said.

There was no reason to be worried though in Friday’s game as Talk 'N Text came up with one big run after another right from the opening quarter on to take full command. A 10-1 surge stretched the difference to a high of 114-83, still 6:35 to go in the game.

In the end, the Tropang Texters posted season-highs in scoring after three quarters (100) and final score en route to their biggest win in the last three conferences and the most lopsided win by any team in the conference.

The loss was Air21’s 11th in 13 games, absorbed after it snapped out of almost a two-month-long drought in which it got beaten for a franchise-worst nine straight games.

“Coming into this game, I told my players that they (Express) are going to attack early,” related Reyes. “So I also told them it is very important for our first unit to come out strong, too.”

Shawn Daniels, Macmac Cardona, Ranidel de Ocampo and Jimmy Alapag did just that, but it was the Williams-led relievers who stymied their Air21 counterparts most as they steadily added on to their lead.

The TNT bench had a 70-58 advantage in scoring.

After scoring only three points on three field tries in the first half, Reggie Larry still wound up with 14 points on top of 10 rebounds for the Express, who also drew at least 10 points each from Mike Cortez, Ren-Ren Ritualo, Beau Belga, Carlo Sharma and Wynne Arboleda.

The Tropang Texters’ crisp passing and better teamwork were spelled out in their 34-28 advantage in assists.

Williams Torches Former Team, Gives Texters 8th Straight Win

(From PBA Online)

Kelly Williams torched his former team with 19 points as Talk 'N Text cruised past Sta. Lucia, 92-78, to book its eighth straight win in the PBA Fiesta Cup Sunday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

The former league Most Valuable Player (MVP) also added 12 rebounds in his most scintillating showing yet since coming over from a blockbuster three-team, nine-player trade two weeks ago.

"We don't want to rock the boat that's why we try hard to quickly jell with the team," said the 6-foot-5 Fil-Am forward.

It was the third consecutive victory for the Tropang Texters since acquiring Williams and Ryan Reyes from the Realtors. At the same time, the team extended its winning run in the import-laden meet to stay in solo second at 8-2 behind defending champion and league leader San Miguel (10-1).

Despite the easy win, coach Chot Reyes believes his team has yet to reach its full potential.

"We're still a work in progress," he admitted, but stressing that "we formed a team that is versatile, one that can score and play defense."

Ranidel de Ocampo added 14 points, MacMac Cardona with 12 and Jimmy Alapag 12 and 10 assists.

Sta. Lucia lost for the second straight game and went down to 4-7 in a tie with Coca-Cola.

Anthony Johnson finished with 29 points and 14 rebounds, but didn't get enough local support as only rookie guard Josh Urbiztondo managed to finish in double figures after the Realtors import with 13.

The Realtors held their own early in the first half, taking a 24-23 lead after 12 minutes of play.

But the moment the Tropang Texters' second unit, led by Williams and Jared Dillinger, took over in the second period, there was nothing the Realtors could do.

Halftime ended with Talk 'N Text already on top by 15 as the Realtors scored only 13 in the period.

"Our second unit played very well and helped us tonight," said Reyes, whose team is coming off a 25-point rout of Derby Ace the last time.

Rampaging Texters Trump Llamados' Defense

(From PBA Online)

Offense trumped defense as Talk 'N Text routed Derby Ace, 114-89, as the Tropang Texters extended their winning streak to seven in the PBA Fiesta Cup Wednesday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Tropang Texters poured in 17 unanswered points in a sizzling third quarter run to rip apart a game of changing fortunes in the opening half.

That mighty show of offense had coach Chot Reyes and his boys suddenly turning a close one-point game into a 67-49 edge with just seven minutes gone by in the third.

The lead eventually ballooned to a 90-64 spread on a Mac Cardona three-pointer with 9:33 left in the game as Talk 'N Text coasted the rest of the way to improve its record to 8-2 overall and stay in solo second.

The total output of the Tropang Texters was the most the Llamados allowed their opponents this conference after holding other teams to a league best 77.0 points average per game.

Except in the second period when Derby Ace limited them to just 18 points, the Tropang Texters scored at least 31 markers in each of the three quarters.

"Hopefully, this gives us a glimpse of our potential," declared Reyes later in the post-game interview. “If the players come out and don't worry about playing time and focus on what they can contribute, then it's a good situation."

Cardona led the Tropang Texters with 23 points, Harvey Carey had 16, Shawn Daniels and Jimmy Alapag added 15 each, while three others - Kelly Williams, Ryan Reyes and Ranidel De Ocampo - were also in double figures in a balanced scoring for the telecommunication franchise.

"Coming into this ballgame, all we talked about is to come out with a great performance. We knew Purefoods is a champion team," added Reyes.

The loss was the worst this conference for the Llamados, snapping their three game winning run.

They fell to 6-4 in a three-way tie for third to fifth places with Barangay Ginebra and Alaska.

James Yap scored a personal conference-high of 28 points for Derby Ace, 17 of them in the second period when the Llamados battled back from a 15-point deficit and trim the gap to 50-49 at halftime.

But the former league most valuable player went cold at the height of that big Talk 'N Text third quarter run and wouldn't buy a basket until the final minute of the period when the Tropang Texters were already in full control, 81-60.

"In the third quarter, James Yap tired a little, but that's big for us," said Reyes.

Cliff Brown carried the fight for the Llamados as the energetic import had 22 points and 18 rebounds. He scored all of the team's first nine points in the second half until Yap's side jumper broke the ice for the Derby Ace locals. - GMANews.TV

Scores:

Talk 'N Text 114 - Cardona 23, Carey 16, Daniels 15, Alapag 15, Williams 14, Reyes 11, De Ocampo 11, Dillinger 3, Waters 2, Castro 2, Aban 2, Yee 0, Quinahan 0.

Derby Ace 89 - Yap J. 28, Brown 22, Artadi 9, Pingris 9, Maierhofer 7, Timberlake 4, Canaleta 4, Simon 4, Yap R. 2, Adducul 0, Reavis 0, Allado 0.

Quarter scores: 32-17, 50-49, 81-63, 114-89.

Barrios To Consult Board On Kelly Trade

(From Manila Standard)

Philippine Basketball Association commissioner Sonny Barrios plans to call for a special board meeting when the impending trade of Sta. Lucia Realty superstar Kelly Williams to Talk N Text finally pushes through.

Barrios considers sensitive the case of the 6’4” high-flying forward, whose looming transfer to the Tropang Texters is designed to allow him from suiting up for the RP-Smart Gilas team.

Officials of both Sta. Lucia and Talk N Text admitted talks have been ongoing on how to make the deal work.

“Frankly, what I intend to do is to ask the (PBA Board) chairman to call for a special meeting rather than I making a decision on my own (regarding the trade),” said Barrios, who sat beside PBA chairman Lito Alvarez in the presidential table during yesterday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s UN Avenue.

“But that would happen if and when a trade is made. Right now kasi, we’re all talking theoretically.”

Alvarez concurred with the PBA commissioner.

“Kapag dumating ‘yung request, the chairman would not hesitate to call a meeting to tackle the case,” said Alvarez, also team manager of Air21, in the session presented by Outlast Battery, Philippine Amusements and Gaming Corporation, Shakey’s and Accel.

RP-Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman has expressed his desire to get the services of Williams to reinforce the national team, specifically in its coming bid for the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar.

PLDT and Smart Sports are bankrolling the campaign of the RP-Smart Gilas squad, whose top official, Manny V. Pangilinan, heads the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and is team owner of the Talk N Text squad.

Barrios urged both parties involved in the negotiations to seriously review the requirements specified in the Uniform Players Contract or UPC.

Under the UPC, players are contracted to play for only two teams, Barrios pointed out, namely, his mother ballclub and in national teams formed by the PBA.

“It’s not to say that it (trade) will be disallowed,” added the commissioner. “But what I want to propose to the board is for the PBA to adopt a long-standing policy, and not on a case-to-case basis, that will be responsive to the need of the national team.

Kelly Williams Soon a Texter

(From Inquirer)

Negotiation for Kelly Williams’ transfer to Talk ‘N Text from Sta. Lucia Realty is expected to get going soon following the expression of gratitude of Texters governor Ricky Vargas recently.

In a radio interview Monday, Vargas thanked Realtors counterpart Buddy Encarnado for his willingness to let go of the 6-foot-7 Williams to play for Smart Gilas in several international tournaments later this year.

But Williams’ case will be far different from that of Japeth Aguilar’s, who the Texters acquired from Burger King (now Air21) but shipped immediately to the Philippine training pool under Serbian coach Rajko Toroman.

Williams, should the deal push through, will play as a Texter in the PBA and will not be used entirely by Smart Gilas, according to Vargas in the same interview.

Vargas added that in exchange, the Realtors can pick any player from the Talk ‘N text roster except Jimmy Alapag, Harvey Carrey, Jason Castro and Mac Cardona.
