The NBA's Brattiest Fans

If you follow NBA news, I'm sure you've already read one form of another of this headline: "Fans throw foam on court in Lakers' loss to Cavs." The headline I'm using here is by Greg Beacham of nba.com, and since I've already gone ahead and quoted his headline, allow me to quote some other parts of his article:

After the Cleveland Cavaliers made the defending NBA champions look ordinary, the Los Angeles Lakers' fans threw up their foam hands in frustration.

...the Cavaliers beat Los Angeles 102-87 Friday in a game that ended with angry Lakers fans throwing dozens of giveaway foam hangs onto the court.

...The Lakers' crowd lost its holiday spirit with 4:04 left when Lamar Odom's ejection and another T on the Lakers' infuriated bench prompted many fans to throw their pregame presents onto the court. Another foul with 3:45 left, several more foam hands were thrown along with a full water bottle, which skittered between players without hitting anyone.

Oh, Lakers fans. Initially, my biggest bone to pick with them was their lack of devotion to their team. Yes, they go around with their jersey-clad chests puffed out, declaring that "Kobe rules," and they hang out on blogs and message boards of other teams and leave (often misspelled and grammatically incorrect) posts or comments reminding everyone that there is basically no point in the season being played out because the Lakers are undeniably the best. (They wouldn't say it that eloquently, BTW.) But these same fans show up to games late and leave early, and why? To avoid traffic. Makes it kind of hard to take them seriously.

And now, this. Yes, the atmosphere at a basketball game can get a little rowdy, which adds to the fun of it, and the recommended decorum does not exactly forbid improper behavior (i.e., name-calling, yelling at refs, taunting, cursing). But isn't there some unspoken rule that states that while verbal assault is great, it should not cross the line into the physical?

Based on the report, it seems no one was hurt, which is a good thing; the chances of people getting hurt from foam fingers and a bottle of water are slim, so it was a harmless tantrum. Nevertheless, it was a tantrum, and that--not safety--is the point of this post. Their team didn't show up, they didn't like the calls--basically, things didn't go their way--and they threw a tantrum.

And so I update the list of things I don't like about Lakers fans:

   1. They are maddeningly and unreasonably biased, making it difficult to have reasonable discussions with them (about basketball).
   2. For all their talk, financial support (they buy tickets and gear), and appearance of being hardcore fans, their actions (i.e., watching games from start to finish) speak otherwise.
   3. They can't spell, nor can they write grammatically correct sentences. Nor, for that matter, do they seem to have the ability to write comments more intelligent or substantial than "Kobe rulz u suck."
   4. They're bratty. (Perhaps this partially stems from a sense of entitlement, which is another thing I dislike.)

If you have anything to add, comment away!
