Burger King Expresses Interest in Omolon

(From Business Mirror)

Burger King will try make one bold move to stay alive in the KFC-Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup.

Whopper team manager Lito Alvarez said on Tuesday the team is keen on tapping Nelbert Omolon via a trade with Sta. Lucia Realty.

The league board chairman said Burger King needs Omolon’s versatility to make the team more competitive and give it more chances of surviving the wild-card round.

“We really need somebody like Omolon to save our future in this conference,” said Alvarez, whose team is currently tied with Coca-Cola with a 5-12 win-loss record. They only have one game left in the double-round elimination.

The BusinessMirror learned that the Whopper offered either Carlo Sharma or JR Quinahan in exchange for Omolon but the Realtors reportedly want Ronnie Matias included in the deal. But Alvarez said they could not let go of Matias.

“Knowing coach Yeng, mahilig ’yan sa matatapang kaya ayaw namin pawalan si Matias,” said Alvarez. “But we’re still talking.”

Alvarez said either Quinahan or Sharma will fit the Realtors right. Sta. Lucia doesn’t have a reliever for six-foot-nine Marlou Aquino. Sta. Lucia had traded veteran center Dennis Espino to the Tigers before the season.

Sta. Lucia is trying to make the quarterfinals but to do so, it has to beat Purefoods Tender Juicy, its last assignment in the eliminations.

If the Whopper fail to land the six-foot-three Omolon, the BusinessMirror learned it will try to lure Jervy Cruz from Rain or Shine. But this early, Elasto Painters coteam owner Raymundo Yu said they are not biting.

Yu also shot down a four-player deal that involved Cruz and Jay-R Reyes for Ali Peek and Yancy de Ocampo of Talk ’N Text.

Chot: It will be a travesty

TALK ’N Text head coach Chot Reyes said it will be a shame if the PBA honors the protest of San Miguel Beer.

The cerebral mentor was shocked to learn that the Beermen protested the Tropang Texters won game (93-91) on Saturday in Zamboanga City.

“Evidently, they are not doing it for themselves but for their sister teams,” Reyes told the BusinessMirror.

PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios has yet to decide on the protest.

“It will be a travesty if the protest is upheld,” Reyes added.

Already secured of a spot in the semifinal round, San Miguel protested the Zamboanga result because the Tropang Texters brought the wrong set of uniforms. Because of that, the game was delayed for an hour.

The league decided to play the game for the sake of the fans who filled the Zamboanga City Coliseum.

The result has no bearing on the Beermen but it could have an impact on the quarterfinal bid of Purefoods Tender Juicy, one of three teams under the San Miguel Corp. wing, the third being Ginebra.

The Giants of coach Ryan Gregorio are holding an 11-6 win-loss record and will play Sta. Lucia Realty (10-6) on Friday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

A win by the Realtors will create a three-way tie among Purefoods, Talk ’N Text and Sta. Lucia, but the Tropang Texters will advance to the quarterfinals because of a superior quotient.
