League executives say the Suns have become more active initiating talks over the past few days, and believe the franchise will take the best offer for Stoudemire before the Feb. 18 trade deadline. The Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets and Detroit Pistons are among multiple teams that have a strong interest in Stoudemire, sources say. The Arizona Republic reported Sunday night that the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers have also inquired about Stoudemire. - Yahoo! Sports
It would be surprising that the Suns would want to do another salary dump trade with a star but it isn't impossible. This move potentially could save team owner Robert Sarver another $10 million and perhaps more. The natural trade that makes sense here would be Zydrunas Ilgauskas and J.J. Hickson for Stoudemire. The Suns could also ask for draft picks, the Cavs own their full slate of first round picks in the future. The Cavs and Suns talked about Hickson the O'Neal deal but the Cavs wanted to keep him. So the Suns have a history of interest in Hickson. They also considered drafting him in 2008 but took Robin Lopez instead. - Cleveland Plain Dealer
The Oklahoma City Thunder seems to have done away with those first two time-tested techniques. Ever since Kevin Durant declared last June that, "Anything less than the playoffs is a failure,” players and coaches have avoided talk of the postseason like they’ve been placed under a gag order. This from a team that, before Saturday’s loss at Cleveland, sat in seventh place in the Western Conference standings. A team that today still sits 2 1/2 games out of the fourth seed, the final spot that brings home-court advantage. - The Oklahoman
A season and a half later, the Bulls are getting everything they could want out of (Derrick) Rose, last year's Rookie of the Year and an All-Star in the making. The Spurs, meanwhile, are getting more than they bargained for from Hill, who snuck into the starting lineup at shooting guard three games ago and is poised to remain there a while. “He's beginning to come into his own,” said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, whose team is looking to stop a two-game skid. “He contributes at both ends of the floor and is getting smarter all the time.” - San Antonio Express-News
With the struggles on offense and defense, Westphal wasn't buying that (Kevin) Martin's return adversely affected the entire team. "These guys have been getting shots and haven't been making them," Westphal said. "Make your shots, and you play more. If you defend well, you play more. It has nothing to do with who's out on the floor. If you're in a bit of a slump and then you start wondering why you're in a slump, it's not anybody else's fault." - Sacramento Bee
Ricky Rubio, whom the Wolves drafted sixth, is playing in Spain this season, switching teams to FC Barcelona. That actually turned out well for the Knicks, who are still marking his progress. Knicks international scout Kevin Wilson, who's responsible for their pick of Danilo Gallinari, lives in Barcelona and the Regal Barcelona team is his hometown club. It has been well-documented Wilson is friends with the Rubio family and Ricky's parents would love to see the Timberwolves deal him to New York. - New York Post
The New York media swarmed Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban on Sunday. But rather than talk about free agency and LeBron James, Cuban steered the conversation toward the All-Star Game. "It literally could be the largest party weekend in the history of the United States," he said. "That's how big this thing has gotten." Cuban says All-Star Weekend might be bigger than the Super Bowl in a way. - The Dallas Morning News
While the Celtics have maintained repeatedly that they have no intentions of moving any of their core guys between now and the Feb. 18 trading deadline -- and I believe 'em on this one -- multiple league sources confirmed today that the Golden State Warriors are giving some thought to putting together a trade package that would involve Monta Ellis going to Boston in exchange for Ray Allen. - CSNNE
Dan Patrick Show - Stephon Marbury on how he came to the decision to play in China: “Well the opportunity came about a month and a half ago or about two months ago. They had asked me about going over there to play. You know I was kind of undecided because I was planning on taking a year off, but I can’t get away from basketball.” - SportsRadioInterviews
Chris Kaman: "Do I think I'm an All-Star?," he told me last week. "I think I am an All-Star, but I don't know if that's what's going to happen. You just never know. It's tough when you don't win. We're kind of on that cusp of winning a lot of games. You look at some of the games we played this year that we let slip away. We were up three or four games 20 points or more and we let teams come back and beat us." - NBA
Nuggets guard J.R. Smith will not be suspended for his poor behavior in Saturday's game, coach George Karl and vice president of player personnel Rex Chapman said Monday morning. Smith participated in the shootaround and will come off the bench in tonight's game against the Bobcats. Joey Graham will start for the injured Carmelo Anthony, Karl said. Anthony (ankle) is day-to-day. Smith didn't stop to speak to the hoards of reporters who were at Monday morning's shootaround. - Denver Post
The Lakers came in first to a standing ovation in the East Room of the White House today, all of them wearing suits for their visit to meet the president of the United States, most of them looking excited and nervous. Then President Obama came in, bounding up to the podium to an ovation that included all the Lakers’ players, all of them with smiles on their faces. Obama congratulated the Lakers for winning the franchise’s 15th NBA championship, a 4-1 NBA Finals victory in June over the Orlando Magic, which was their fourth in the last decade. - LA Times Blog
Obama imitated the famous hanging, up-and-under move Michael Jordan made in which he switched the ball from his right hand to his left for a layup. “They [the Lakers] won the first game and they were feeling cocky,” the president said as the crowd laughed. Magic Johnson laughed at the president talking trash to him. “Yes, I got a kick out of that,” Johnson said. “What can you say when the president of the United States can trash-talk you? Normally I have a good comeback, but this time, I had to let him slide.” - LA Times Blog
