Sta. Lucia Realtors 95, Elasto Painters 91

The Sta. Lucia Realtors desperately needed a win against Rain or Shine Wednesday night.
Things didn’t look good, though, in the closing minutes and the Realtors’ shot for a trouble-free entry into the quarterfinals of the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup appeared in jeopardy.
But with the game on the line, Kelly Williams took matters into his hands, scoring six straight dagger points inside 60 seconds as the Realtors held off the Elasto Painters, 95-91, at the Araneta Coliseum.
The 2007-08 MVP’s two free throws with 1:59 remaining tied the count at 89 then hit a tough turnaround shot to put the Realtors ahead to stay. The slam-dunking forward knocked in another jumper before Ryan Reyes made two free throws to complete an 8-0 wind-up that took the fight away from the Elasto Painters.
“Kelly was really terrific tonight. He stepped up in the closing seconds and made two crucial shots. That’s why he is the leader of this team,” said Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernandez during the post-game interview.
Williams, who leads everyone in the conference in the rebounding department, turned in 25 points and had a career-high-tying 19 boards for his 11th double-double – the most by any player in the conference.
He was practically unstoppable in the fourth quarter accounting for 15 of his team’s 24 markers in the period.
“Kelly wasn’t the only one who did well tonight. Ryan (Reyes) also did a good job working the backcourt and Jason (Misolas) hit some crucial shots when Rain or Shine threatened to make a run,” Fernandez said.
The Realtors improved to 8-6 (win-loss) record, just a game behind Barangay Ginebra and Purefoods (9-6), to stay in contention for one of three outright quarterfinal berths.
“Before the game I told the players we need to win all our five remaining games if we want an easy way into the quarters. I’m glad they responded well,” Fernandez said.
The Realtors will go for W No. 9 on Friday against struggling Burger King.
“I expect a tough match against Burger King. But we’ll be ready on Friday,” Fernandez said.
Joseph Yeo scored 12 points, seldom-used Misolas had 10 and Reyes dished off six assists for the Realtors, who bounced back from a 112-117 loss against Talk N’ Text last Dec. 23.
Starting the new year on a high note, Sta. Lucia posted the games biggest margin at 28-18 late in the first quarter although the game was close the rest of the way, the count being tied seven times.
Rain or Shine, which dropped to a 4-11 slate, appeared to have seized the momentum when Jeff Chan knocked in a three that put the Elasto Painters ahead, 89-87, with 2:12 remaining.
But they went scoreless in the next 1:30 minutes, spoiling their efforts.
Gave Norwood scored 18 points and Chan added 17 for the Elasto Painters, who missed 14 of 31 free throws and 8 of 17 in the fourth.
Sta. Lucia outrebounded ROS, 62-42 and enjoyed a 15-6 edge off the offensive boards in the second half that netted them 14 points. (DBC)

Barangay Ginebra 105, Talk N Text 82
(From PBA.com.ph)
Barangay Ginebra hardly showed rustiness from the two-week Christmas break, blasting Talk n Text, 105-82, in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum Wednesday night.
The Kings started strong and finished stronger, hacking out the emphatic win that enhanced their bid for a spot in the Magic Five.
“This is an important win. We have two more games left and hopefully we can sustain our run. I don’t know if we can still get an outright semis berth but we’ll be happy getting automatic entry into the quarters,” said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico.
“Getting an outright quarters slot was our original target. Medyo nagbago lang noong medyo hindi umusad because of injuries to our key players. But we’ve got into the groove and we’re hoping to get going,” Uichico added.
The Kings caught up with the Tropang Texters at third on their identical 10-6 win-loss cards, behind the San Miguel Beermen (12-3) and the Alaska Milk Aces (11-2).
JC Intal, Ronald Tubid, Enrico Villanueva and Eric Menk each scored at least 10 points as the Kings avenged a 15-point loss to the Tropang Texters in their previous encounter.
Mark Caguioa returned from the injured list, getting eight points, two rebounds and one assist in nine minutes of action.
“Mark played longer than what we anticipated. We’re not planning to play him that much but the opportunity came along. He’s status is still wait and see,” Uichico said.
Intal and Tubid continued to play well at wing spots, combining for 37 points, 13 rebounds and five assists.
Talk n Text’s Macmac Cardona, the league leading scorer, was limited to seven points as he picked up two early fouls and ended up playing only 27 minutes.
Still, the Texters engaged the Kings in a fierce battle in the first three quarters before fading away in the face of Ginebra’s searing charge in the final canto.
Intal, Tubid and Billy Mamaril fuelled Ginebra’s decisive fourth-quarter run leading to a second straight win following a triumphant closing game in 2009 versus Coca-Cola.
Intal led all scorers with 19 points, capping his exploits with an electrifying 360-degree slam in the closing minutes.
Steadier early on, the Texters took the half at 47-43.
Talk n Text got off to a slow start but shifted to high gear in the second quarter, erasing a 20-28 deficit in the opening period.
The Kings, meanwhile, hit at a high 57-percent clip in the first quarter before slowing down with a 28.6-percent shooting in the second period.
Ginebra came alive again in the third quarter, surging ahead again at 74-70.
And there’s simply no stopping Ginebra in the final period. (SB)
The scores:
Ginebra 105 - Intal 19, Tubid 18, Villanueva 12, Menk 10, Cruz 8, Caguioa 8, Baguio 7, Wilson 6, Mamaril 6, Salvacion 6, White 5, Abarrientos 0.
Talk n Text 82 - Alapag 17, Castro 15, Carey 12, De Ocampo R. 11, Cardona 7, Belasco 5, Dillinger 4, Peek 4, Ritualo 0, Isip 3, Escobal 0, De Ocampo Y. 0.
