PBA Game Results

Phone Pals 93, Beermen 91 (From Manila Bulletin)

Unable to earn an outright seat in the Final Four, defending champion Talk ’N Text assured itself of a playoff for one of three automatic slots in the quarterfinals following a huge 93-91 win over San Miguel Beer Saturday in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the Zamboanga Coliseum in Zamboanga City.

Veteran point guard Jimmy Alapag made the go-ahead basket when he drove the baseline against the defense of Dondon Hontiveros in the dying seconds to lift the TNT Tropang Texters to victory, finishing the classification phase with an 11-7 win-loss card.

The setback gave the Beermen a 13-5 record after the classification round. The semis-bound team has dropped its last two assignments going to the best-of-seven series.

TNT’s win ended a two-game losing skid. The Chot Reyes-mentored team lost to Barangay Ginebra, 82-105, last Jan. 6 and to tail-ender Barako Bull, 97-99, last Sunday at the Big Dome.

“We beat the top team but we lost to the worst team. Perfect picture of our conference so far,” Reyes said after the final game of the PBA on Road presented by Phoenix Fuel.

Talk ’N Text can earn automatic slot into the quarterfinals if Sta. Lucia Realty (9-7) fails to sweep its last two games.

The Realtors were playing against Barako Bull at presstime. They take on the Purefoods TJ Hotdogs on Friday at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo City.

Im Zamboanga, SMB came back from a five-point deficit to tie the score at 91-all before Alapag seized the moment, getting past Mike Cortez and Hontiveros for the game-winning lay-up.

TNT took a 91-86 lead with Mark Cardona scoring four points in a 7-2 run with 1:25 left in the game. San Miguel, however, rallied back behind Cortez and Arwind Santos.

The 6-foot-1 Cardona, the leading scorer this all-Filipino conference but was held to an average of 7.5 points the last two games, fired 26 points with four rebounds. Alapag contributed 14, four boards and the same number of assists.

Cortez led the Beermen with 20 points, while Jay Washington added 17 and 13 boards.

Talk ’N Text shot better from the field, 36-of-79 or 45.6 percent to San Miguel’s 34-of-83 or 41 percent.

The scores:

Talk ’N Text 93 — Cardona 26, Peek 15, Alapag 14, Belasco 8, Castro 7, De Ocampo R. 7, Carey 6, Dillinger 4, Ritualo 3, De Ocampo Y. 3.

San Miguel 91 — Cortez 20, Washington 17, Santos 14, Hontiveros 12, Racela 9, Seigle 6, Miranda 6, Villanueva 5, Holper 2, Custodio 0, Tugade 0.
