Coaches: Llamados Team To Beat

(From Manila Standard Today)

RYAN Gregorio, an underdog throughout his coaching career, must learn to adapt to the changes happening in the Philippine Basketball Association.

That’s because his coaching counterparts have immediately installed his Derby Ace Llamados as the favored team in the coming PBA Fiesta Conference, set to begin Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.

“I have to admit, Purefoods, now known as Derby Ace, should be put on top of the list,” said Sta. Lucia mentor Boyet Fernandez, whose team defeated the squad formerly known as the Giants in seven grueling matches of the same tournament three seasons ago.

“Our team should be put right in the middle of the pack. Derby Ace should be on top because it won the All-Filipino. San Miguel should be ranked no.2, while the no.3 is a toss up among Ginebra, Talk N Text and Alaska. Let’s not forget Rain or Shine to be included among the favorites,” he added.

Rain or Shine, which last season accomplished a milestone for its franchise, will be back as a solid group. The Elasto Painters have returning solid import Jai Lewis, who carried the squad all the way to the Final Four.

The burly import will now have a team that has become better and stronger with key acquisitions in the off season.

Like Fernandez, coach Siot Tanquingcen of San Miguel Beer, also picked the Llamados as the team to beat, while ranking his defending champion Beermen as fourth behind Ginebra and Talk N Text.

But Gregorio thinks otherwise.

“San Miguel should be the no.1. It’s a strong team that got stronger with the acquisition of Joseph Yeo. What do we expect from them in the coming conference but see them on top?” asked Gregorio.

The Beermen won last year’s Fiesta Conference with Gabe Freeman as reinforcement. Freeman will be back in action for a San Miguel Beer team loaded with firepower. The inclusion of Yeo will provide the squad an added depth in its backcourt rotation.
