RAIN OR SHINE LOCALS PAINT TOWN RED

(From PBA)

THIS is one instance when an import would have no problem staying in the bench.

With its locals doing a splendid job Rain or Shine had little trouble notching a 90-82 victory over skidding Barako Coffee Sunday in the PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.

Jay-R Reyes and Gabe Norwood combined for 21 fourth quarter points and starred in a massive run that broke open a close game and pointed their team to its second straight win in three starts despite Jai Lewis riding the bench for the entire final period.

“I was asking Jai if he wanted to play in the last six minutes, but he pointed out there was no need,” related Elasto Painters coach Caloy Garcia. “Medyo kasi gumanda ang ball movement and transition defense namin kaya I also personally saw no reason to bring him back.”

Lewis still wound up with team-highs of 20 points and 13 rebounds despite being taken out – it turned out for good – with still 53.7 seconds to go in the third period and his team barely ahead, 60-56.

Sammy Monroe, who led all scorers with 27 points, maintained the four-point difference with a drive, making it 58-62, still 11:24 left. That basket and his charity would prove to be the only points Barako can put up in nearly five minutes.

Reyes scattered seven points and Norwood added five during a 12-3 run, giving RoS a 74-59 spread that proved safe enough to cruise with the rest of the way.

Norwood and Reyes finished with 15 points and nine rebounds each, with the former also adding seven assists while anchoring the defense on Monroe.

Garcia said the win is good but the morale boost it gives to his team is even better.

“It’s hard to say if we can go deep in this tournament because almost all the teams have good imports,” he said.

Norwood wholeheartedly agrees. “Imports may change and there’s no telling how things can go,” said Norwood. “But we’re playing with a lot of confidence right now and that’s good. We’re just trying to get better every time.”

Jojo Duncil, Aris Dimaunahan and Rob Wainwright were the only other double digit scorers for Barako Coffee, which absorbed its third straight setback after opening up the tournament with a win.

Monroe scored 20 of his points in the second half and got help from Dimaunahan, Chad Alonzo and Duncil in trimming what was a 16-point deficit into just two several times, the last at 54-56.

Then Lewis scored from underneath and Ryan Arana followed with a drive before Duncil’s charities, while Lewis was being taken out, made it a four-point game.

Hounded by Norwood for majority of the first half, Monroe was limited to just seven points in the first two quarters and only two in the second where he made just two of six shots.

Dimaunahan and Duncil actually tried to pick up the scoring cudgels, but there was simply too much Rain or Shine to handle, especially when Chan joined the fray started by Lewis and Sol Mercado.

Making four of six shots, including two triples, Lewis already had 13 points and eight rebounds at the half. Jeffrei Chan added 10 of his 11 points in the second quarter that ended with the Elasto Painters ahead 42-31 after leading by 30-14 and 41-25.

Lewis and Mercado combined for 11 first quarter points that had them scoring all but two of the Painters’ output. They also outscored the entire Energy Boosters squad by two as the latter missed 11 of 15 shots and committed seven turnovers. (NC)
