Alston to Miami? Nets Gets Quinn

Alston, who had been moved out of the New Jersey Nets' rotation, completed a buyout Tuesday with the Nets, and plans to sign Thursday with the Heat. "I'm coming," he said Tuesday night. "I can't explain in words how excited I am. I'm really excited." In order to clear room for Alston in its backcourt rotation, the Heat on Tuesday traded seldom-used point guard Chris Quinn, as well as its second-round pick in the 2012 NBA Draft and cash to the Nets. - South Florida Sun-Sentinel

The New Jersey Nets have acquired guard Chris Quinn from the Miami Heat along with the Heat’s second round draft pick in 2012 and cash considerations in exchange for the Nets’ 2010 second round draft pick (protected 31-50), Nets President Rod Thorn announced today.  - InsideHoops.com

The Los Angeles Clippers have targeted Jan. 20 as the night they hope rookie forward Blake Griffin finally makes his NBA debut, a league source told Yahoo! Sports.  - Yahoo! Sports

Another factor two Western Conference executives threw out Wednesday: Whether it's the secondary nature of his role with Arenas back from his knee issues or his struggles to adapt to Flip Saunders' offense, Butler just had his two best seasons when Arenas wasn't playing. The prospect of a long suspension (or worse) for Arenas could give Washington further pause when it comes to moving its next-best player.  - ESPN.com

One of the league's meatier trade exceptions, worth $3.2 million from last January's Chucky Atkins trade to Oklahoma City, expires Thursday for the Nuggets. But two sources with knowledge of the Nuggets' thinking said it's unlikely that they will use the trade "credit" -- most commonly employed to acquire a player via trade without having to send out a matching salary or giving anything up beyond future draft considerations or cash -- to avoid adding further to Denver's luxury-tax bill.  - ESPN.com

The Bucks tried without success, sources said, to trade reserve guard Roko Ukic in recent weeks, only for Ukic to surprise them by taking the unusual step of asking Milwaukee to release him from his contract immediately.  - ESPN.com

At least two sources with knowledge of Orlando's thinking remain convinced that the Magic will not consider trading reserve center Marcin Gortat before the summer.  - ESPN.com

Sources said the team would prefer to move Jamison, 33, a good soldier and automatic 20-point, eight-rebound performer every night. The free-spending Cavaliers have long been enamored with the versatile Jamison, and they might be willing to absorb the final two years of underachieving Andray Blatche's contract to get him. - Sports Illustrated

According to multiple league sources, Washington is making its entire roster available and is open to all trades, including for players who bring less talent but have shorter contracts. But while interest in veterans, like Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler, has been strong, sources told SI.com that teams aren't too keen on obtaining Arenas. - Sports Illustrated

Although it has been widely expected that league officials will abide by their usual practice -- which is to wait for penalties to be meted out through the legal system before imposing their own sanctons -- sources told ESPN.com that suspending Arenas while he awaits his legal fate remains an option under consideration by NBA commissioner David Stern depending on how long the case goes because Arenas has already admitted to possessing firearms on Wizards property.  - ESPN.com

He had reason to celebrate after scoring a season-high 20 points and grabbing eight rebounds in Tuesday night’s win over the Golden State Warriors. “I know that I’m an NBA player,” Graham said. “I came in here with a confidence and a swagger knowing that I was going to be a Denver Nugget. I kept that mentality the whole time. My mindset wasn’t about guaranteed or non-guaranteed. My mindset was coming in here and playing hard.”  - NBA.com

The Hawks are in their worst slump of the season, and they hope meetings are the solution. After losing their past four and six of their past eight, the Hawks held a players-only meeting Tuesday, which followed a post-practice meeting led by coach Mike Woodson. "It was just guys talking about what we need to do," forward Marvin Williams said. "It was all positive, all positive things." - Atlanta Journal Constitution

The National Basketball Association announced today that Commissioner David Stern has denied the Dallas Mavericks’ protest of their 116-108 loss to the Houston Rockets on December 18. In the protest, the Mavericks argued that the referees, following an instant replay review, improperly called a technical foul on Erick Dampier with 1:01 remaining in overtime, which – as his second technical foul – resulted in his ejection from the game.  - InsideHoops.com

The Sixers informed Iverson and the media Tuesday that they'd guaranteed Iverson's contract for the remainder of the season. They could've waived him and subtracted his veterans-minimum salary today, if they wanted to. The Sixers will end up paying Iverson roughly $700,000. "Since his arrival, Allen has done everything asked of him and been an excellent teammate," said Sixers president Ed Stefanski in a release. - Philly Burbs

The fans chanted things like "Don't shoot" and "Stop gunning" when the Wizards' Gilbert Arenas touched the ball. Arenas reportedly pulled a gun on teammate Javaris Crittenton on Dec. 21 after keeping guns in his Washington locker, according to published reports. He met with league officials Monday to discuss the issue and could face a significant fine/suspension. Jordan tried to side-step the issue before the game and talked only about Arenas' basketball abilities, saying Arenas is an "assassin on the court." - Philly Burbs

Few matchups at the Pepsi Center are more scintillating than Carmelo-LeBron — except for last season, when a banged-up Carmelo Anthony scored just 13 points, one more than Anthony Carter. But Melo missed his third consecutive game Tuesday night with a bruised right knee, and now he's unsure whether he will play Friday night against James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. "It's more motivation to get back, but regardless of how much I want to play in that game, or how big of a game that is for our team, I won't risk myself," Anthony said Tuesday. - Denver Post

The Daily News has learned that Magic Johnson's request for comp tickets to a Knicks game last month was rejected due in part to his criticism of Isiah Thomas, the team's former president and head coach, who remains close to Garden chairman James Dolan. The Knicks would neither confirm nor deny that Johnson was told that they wouldn't provide him with a ticket to the team's Dec. 7 game against Portland. - NY Daily News

So Walsh had team security director John Donohue talk to the Knicks. "We repeated what we have told them all along, which is: You can't have a gun in New York because it's against the law," Walsh said.  - NY Daily News
